Hi there,
There are moments in life that somehow get engraved onto the backs of your eyelids and where you know you will never be the same again. Friday night was one of those moments. Many of you will know that Shane de Beer's wife, Monica and their two small children died in a fire in Norwood almost two months ago, and what began as a fundraising dinner turned out to be a magical and very special event for the family, friends and Joburg.co.za readers. I have to say that the VERY best part of the evening was when Shane led all of us into the middle of the Nelson Mandela Square where we released 750 balloons as a reminder to be grateful for what we have, memories we have made, and people that we love. I have also spent the last two days sourcing some fabulous events for you - pay attention now because I think you'll like these!
- The first-ever Robertson Wine Valley Festival will take place at Kloofzicht Lodge on Saturday, 18th and Sunday, 19th of September! Experience the Cape right on our doorstep as you taste new wines, chat to the wine makers and enjoy a fabulous day in the Cradle of Humankind!
- I love the sound of Sunday lunch at the Balata Restaurant at the Randpark Golf Course! Dad can hit a few balls at the driving range, mom can pop into The Fairway Spa, and teenagers can make use of the on-site WIFI and Facebook and Twitter to their hearts delight! (And, the menu is sublime!)
- Maropeng has two pretty awesome events lined up for this Saturday, 11th of September. The first is their Coopers Cave Picnic where you can enjoy a picnic lunch, explore a cave, look for fossils and make stone tools. That night, there is the Stargazing: Springtime event which includes dinner, a laser-guided binocular tour and stargazing through the telescopes!
- I will be taking Kayla and one of her friends to Gold Reef City Theme Park this Saturday, and this time I will be spending the whole day! There are fantastic indoor and outdoor activities, brilliant shows, fabulous rides, Jozi's only 4D Theatre, a farmyard, and so much more. And the weather is BEAUTIFUL at the moment.
Also a heads-up about two events taking place in October (you need to book now):
- Poker fans will not want to miss the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Africa Tournament, taking place at the Emerald Resort & Casino between Sunday, 24th and Sunday, 31st of October. Three of the biggest names in international poker have signed up – it’s going to be an incredible event!
- The ladies of Third Thursday are up to their fundraising efforts again, and this time they’ve roped in Gill Marcus, Governor of the Reserve Bank, to help them raise funds for the Big Shoes Foundation. This is a stunning opportunity for a night out with friends (although I also think it would be an outstanding opportunity to entertain clients ). The dinner takes place on Wednesday, 13th of October. As for me, I have a brand new toy that I am playing with every single day, much to the horror of my RGM (Revolting General Manager). She says it’s not a toy and should only be used for “safety” reasons. I think it’s cheaper than therapy! Click here for a sneak peek!
