A New Day Dawns At The City Of The Sun

If you haven’t heard by now, the iconic Sun City is going through a facelift. Sun International is spending a whopping R800 million over the next year or so in order to make its world-class resort even better … and we got to take a look at (and experience) some of the improvements! Plus, a lucky Joburg.co.za reader could win a stay for two at the Cabanas! Read on to find out how to enter our giveaway!

Let’s be honest, we all have at least one fond memory of Sun City – growing up, it was the place to have fun with my friends and family. If you’re feeling a hint of nostalgia right about now, then you’ll be happy to know that this fun favourite is going through a little (or rather, big) revamp. I recently went on a tour of Sun City to see just what management is up to.

Driving up to the entrance, I felt a whole bunch of memories flooding back. Personally, I love this place (I’m sure you can tell) … it’s an all-in-one destination. Anyway, it’s inside Sun City where the real fun begins. As you drive in, you can already see the construction of Sun Sky Village – a temporary, fully-equipped facility which will host all of the conferences at the resort and casino while the Entertainment Centre goes through its makeover.

The real highlight for me though, is the addition of Adrenaline Extreme! It’s an adventure hub with a range of awesome activities to keep the kids (and adults alike – I’m an example of that) entertained. Let’s just say that the moment I saw the drift trike track … my inner kid burst through. If you’ve got a need for speed, then this is for you – and it’s about R250 for 15 minutes (time seems to go on forever when you’re having a blast). There are also other cool activities like the Grizzly 4X4 quad circuit, Hovercrafts and the Accelerator (sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?).

Oh, and just so you know, the accommodation facilities at Sun City have also been revamped. The rooms at the Cabanas at Sun City now have a whole new look (think modern and colourful) … and even Palm Terrace looks revitalised. The Sun City Hotel itself aims to be a Vegas-style party zone, complete with night clubs, burlesque clubs and restaurants (so there’s definitely entertainment for everyone!).

Another addition to the Sun City complex is Sun Park, a facility for hosting lifestyle events, music festivals and product launches … so it’s safe to say that by the end of 2016, you’ll be looking at a completely-transformed leisure destination.

Now I’m sure you’re all also wondering about the Valley of the Waves and whether or not there will be any changes there. Well, you’ll be happy to know that not only have they put in an awesome new slide but also a new fast food arena, Food Factory and a pub, The Brew Monkey have been opened to enhance the food offering. I should know, I got to enjoy their Brew Monkey Burger, which is a 100 per cent beef burger with crispy bacon, cheddar, onions, tomato and their famous BBQ sauce as well as their yummy Marshmallow Milkshake … so good!

Anyway, there’s so much going on, it’s almost hard to wrap your head around it … but rest assured, your entire family will continue to be entertained at the new, and still improving, Sun City!
