Public spaces have come a long way, and along with the improvement of these areas comes challenges that are constantly evolving. Owing to these challenges, there comes a need for continuous innovation and a fresh approach to public space design. With this in mind, Cobra Product Design will be offering a fantastic opportunity in this year’s competition.
What’s The Focus Of The Competition?
Entries can focus on any of the following products or combination of products (multiple entries permitted):
- Basin and tap/mixer
- Shower facilities, including a mixer/tap and shower head (i.e. for communal ablutions, at the beach etc.)
- Toilet and/or urinal, including a flush system
- Restroom for people with disabilities.
Entrants can completely reinvent the public restroom, or re-imagine its functioning as never seen before. Apart from energy and water conservation, designs should also take into consideration hygiene, vandalism, product integration, ease of installation, and cost and availability of manufacturing materials. Ultimately, Cobra Product Design are looking for entries which express a communal design identity that are highly innovative and creative.
This year’s competition also has a new judge – Murray Sharp, a product designer at retail Design Company, Barrows Design and Manufacturing, in Durban. He will be joining the existing judges Greg Scott, Director of Greg Wright Architects & SITE Interior Design; Ronelle Badenhorst, Category Director at Grohe Dawn Watertech; Marcia Margolius, Editor of SA Décor & Design; and Megan Hesse, co-owner of product design studio and store, Anatomy Design, on the judging panel.
Student designers in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban can also look forward to a series of road shows at selected institutions where Cobra representatives, along with the competition judges from those regions, will be available to provide competition information, as well as offer motivation and inspiration to students with their entries.
