August 8 and 9: Women’s Day hotel lunch and accommodation special

August 6: Cooper’s Cave picnic
Explore the 1.5-million-year-old Cooper’s Cave fossil site with palaeoanthropologist Christine Steininger, where several species of animals and a number of stone tools have been found. Enjoy a guided tour around the site, suitable for the whole family, and learn how to make stone tools and search for fossils, all followed by a delicious picnic lunch.

Bone Detectives tour launches at Maropeng: August 13
Maropeng is thrilled to announce the launch of a new walking tour at the Sterkfontein Caves. Bone Detectives will take visitors on a journey back through time to learn about how scientists pieced together the story of evolution by observing fossils. Watch a video about the Bone detectives tour.

University of the Witwatersrand scientist and human origins expert Brendon Billings guides the tour, which begins with an overview of evolution and hominoid skeletal anatomy.

Follow up the bones tour with an in-depth exploration through Sterkfontein Caves with award-winning tour guide Reuben Tsime ; find out how geology has helped with the dating of fossils discovered there; and finish the morning’s adventures with a delicious picnic lunch overlooking scenic views of the Cradle of Humankind.

Winter Special July 19 – August 20
The Winter Special, runs until August 31sy and includes dinner, bed and breakfast and a tour of the Maropeng Visitor Centre.

Here is the breakdown of the Winter Special costs:

  • Per adult in a single room, not sharing – R1 257
  • Per adult in a double room, sharing – R857
  • Room for a child – R700 with meals charged per year of age (4 – 12 years old).

These rates are subject to availability and do not include a tourism levy which is charged on checkout as per South African law.
