In the past ten years I have survived an asymmetrical bob, a high-risk pulmonary embolism, a sneak preview of Shutter Island, and Pleurisy. I’ve watched someone I love die of cancer and someone I most definitely do not love sit in the SA presidential seat. I have become acutely aware of the fact that bad guys often win and nice guys sometimes finish last and the karmic wheel takes its sweet time to spin around and set things right. My rent has been raised, my enthusiasm has been curbed, my kid sister has been bullied, and I can’t find a pair of silver sandals to save my soul.
As summer approaches, I believe it’s rather apt to add this season of sunshine to my survival list. I’ve barely managed to make it through the past few, and this year I’m determined to lose those 5kgs, be more than semi-sunkissed, avoid bikini top incidents that happened on the beach like last year, be completely hair free and find those darn silver sandals if it kills me.
Putting one unsandaled foot in front of the other and trying to move forward in the midst of all this chaos, I put together a list:
My 5 pre-summer commandments
1.) I shalt attend the House of Horrors three times a week (this is where Steve the trainer aka Hitler in Nikes resides)
2.) I shalt not eat anything containing carbs for the next month (excluding Pizza, Burgers, Roast Potatoes and Pasta)
3.) I shalt make use of spray tans / sun beds
4.) I shalt go shopping for extra strength bikini tops that don’t come undone
5.) I shalt book an appointment for a type of hair removal system
I eventually did some research on laser hair removal (you may view this below). And excited as ever to try something new, I booked my appointment with Light Touch Med Spa, situated in the medical suites of Killarney Mall. Hair removal was no longer going to elude me I thought! I will be She-rah, fighter of all wayward under arm hair and maker of smooth skin extraordinaire.
My very experienced and friendly technician welcomed me in and explained everything I needed to know, such as not going into the sun afterward and staying away from alcohol based deodorants/perfumes for the next 24 hours after the treatment.
Once my technician began it felt like a snapping sensation, not the most comfortable feeling but certainly not painful. The whole procedure is very quick and it ONLY took 15mins to do both underarms.
I had no side effects, no itching and no scabbing. Niks. Nothing. Nada. After a week, I noticed MUCH slower hair growth and after 3 weeks I only have to shave every other day. The most important thing is that there’s no underarm Five O Clock Shadow! I’ve only had one treatment at Light Touch Med Spa and still need to book a few more for permanent removal, but for now I’m ecstatic with the results.
Hair laser removal is by far another giant leap for Wo-Mankind. Now there’s no reason for any woman to be building an under arm forest a la Julia Roberts. The fact that laser hair removal is now so readily available and affordable, practically makes it a crime not to consider having it done, bearing in mind that it is permanent and painless! This is no longer just a luxury treatment for the rich and famous, a high-quality salon laser hair removal is currently available at Light Touch Med Spa and at prices you can afford.

Here are 5 questions I asked and the answers:
How does high-tech hair removal work? There are a couple options, both of which rely on heated lights: Laser beam or intense pulsed light (IPL). Lasers are focused beams, whereas IPL uses interspersed flashes. While one visit will result in a lot of hair removal, it takes about 5 to 8 visits each one month apart to permanently reduce unwanted hair. Hair grows in cycles so you want to make sure you get as much of it as possible.
Is everyone a good candidate? Lasers work best on people with pale skin and dark hair (like me!), but Light Touch Med Spa is one of the few laser clinics to offer all three types of laser treatments for permanent hair removal, suitable for ANY skin type.
Are the results guaranteed? It’s impossible to predict how successful lasers will work on everyone. Results depend on the quality of the laser, the type of hair you have and the number of procedures you have done. I suggest booking a consultation in person before you sign up.
How much does it cost? Depends on the areas being treated. Again, it takes about 5 to 8 sessions to get rid of hair permanently; but it will save you money long term. Think about it: when you add up how much the average woman spends each year on salon facial and body waxing combined with the cost of the do-it-yourself products for underarm, leg, bikini, and facial hair removal, the sum really begins to add up.
What about scarring? When I looked into getting this done for this article, a friend of mine told me a ‘funny story’ about a writer (I think she referred to her as the ‘guinea pig’) who got her entire body treated carpe diem at a ‘cheapos’ salon. She ended up scarred for life. For this very reason, you want to skip the discount places and get treated by a trained technician at an established medical facility such as Light Touch Med Spa.
What about in-grown hairs? Because lasers kill the follicle, hair won’t grow back causing in-grown hairs you get with waxing (waxing damages the follicle, it doesn’t always kill it and hair can grow in on itself).
