Our home has three bedrooms, all north facing.
There are two bathrooms, each of which has marble floors, Showerlux showers, and each bathroom has its own bath.
The main bedroom’s bathroom is en-suite and a separate town gas geyser has been installed to minimise disruptions in the event of power failures.
Both bathrooms have underfloor heating.
There are 1 1/2 studies, a television room, a dining room with an attractive outlook, a lounge and state-of-the-art kitchen.
The lounge/dining room area have an open Jetmaster fireplace and a very effective Riene flue gas heater (so all combustion products are exhausted outside the house) with automatic electric timer, thermostat controls and electric start features. This heater has proved most effective in warming this area in winter, and it may be totally automated.
The kitchen has a substantial floor area and is designed as a ‘Living kitchen’, with an emphasis on convenience and easy entertaining. It leads directly on to a patio/pool area, making entertaining very easy. The kitchen is ideal for cosy, sit down family meals.
State of the art features include a Miele high speed electric hob, a town gas wok hob (again a useful precaution in case of electricity outages), granite tops, water plumbing for fridge and freezer, a large AEG oven with fan and sophisticated controls, and solid beech hand crafted cupboards. The flush and hard wearing granite surfaces and glass top stove all ensure easy cleaning and maintenance, and an overall tidy appearance when entertaining.
Underneath the kitchen is a generously sized cellar.
Our home has two double garages with a workshop and storage areas. Each garage has independent remote controlled electric doors.
The swimming pool is of a generous size, and provides a focus for outside entertaining in the quiet and secluded back garden. Since this area is directly off from the kitchen, it makes entertaining exceptionally easy.
A water feature with a gentle trickle fountain welcomes visitors at the front gate.
When we moved into our home we undertook extensive trenching, laying down copious amounts of compost and bonemeal almost a metre below the topsoil level to provide good foundations for our future garden. Dozens of indigenous plants were planted. These are now well established and have fulfilled our hope of a low maintenance, bird friendly garden. Four separate sprinkler systems are installed, two of which require minor repairs.
The generously sized pool – approximately 9 m long – is in good condition. It has been lined with fibreglass, and this, together with the continuous salt water chlorinator, have proved the answer for an easy to maintain formula.
The independent well appointed cottage comprises a lounge, bedroom, bathroom-en-suite, kitchen and entertainment patio with a good outlook, and a small private garden.
The cottage has off street parking under a carport for two vehicles.
Location – close to work:
If you are finding traffic to and from work becoming more and more stressful, then our home may be the answer if you work in:
Braamfontein, Parktown, Downtown
Wits and Johannesburg Universities
Rosebank, Illovo, Melrose Arch
Dunkeld, Hyde Park
Melville, Parkhurst or Emmarentia
Suburbs immediately south of the M2, for example Robertsham, Industria and Turffontein
Location – close to schools:
Many routes to Johannesburg’s finest private and public schools are close to our home. Every year, as our children have become older, so have the demands on Mom’s and Dad’s taxi increased. And who wants to deny them the wonderful learning, sporting and cultural opportunities they can be exposed to? All the easier if you chose to live close to school!
Our home is well located for the following schools:
The Ridge and St Catherine’s
Auckland Park Preparatory
Parktown Girls and Parktown Boys
Rosebank Convent and Rosebank Primary
Forrestown Cerebral Palsy
De La Salle (Victory Park)
Location – in the Parks greenbelt:
Our home is a stone’s throw away from two gems of the Park’s greenbelt, the Parkview Golf Course with the Braamfontein Spruit meandering through. Access is only two doors away at the end of our cul-de sac. After a stressful day, there is nothing more relaxing than to step through the secure gate of the golf course and take a walk through the green acres of this well tended landscape.
After a thunderstorm, we are reminded of the raw power of nature, as we can hear the coursing of the Braamfontein Spruit from our home. Over the years, nature has returned to our neighbourly Braamfontein Spruit. Owls may sometimes be seen in the trees, Egyptian geese compete with the hadedas in their noisy flamboyance, coots, dabchicks and moorhens paddle the ponds, and even a breeding pair of the rare black duck maintain their nervous presence in the flowing river.
Many people will drive kilometres and park outside our home so as to be able to walk their dogs in this wonderful green preserve. With our wonderful location, all we have to do is to step out of our garden gate. Over the years a warm community of friendly neighbours, walkers and their dogs has grown, an experience to treasure.
Access to the golf course requires one to become a walking member of the club, and we can highly recommend it.
Location – In a safe and secure suburb whose residents care:
Parktown North falls under the jurisdiction of the Parkview Police Station, a station with a reputation for one of the most pro-active, responsive and highest standards of policing in the country.
In addition to the active participation of the community in community policing, there are a number of community initiatives to improve safety and security, including street watches and domestic watches.
There is also an active Parktown North Residents Association. They are actively concerned about security and have taken important initiatives in maintaining and planning for good aesthetics and traffic flows in the suburbs. While a lot of their work continues behind the scenes, we all benefit from their sterling efforts in enjoying an enriched lifestyle in Parktown North.
These positive initiatives mean that living in Parktown North adds greatly to one’s feeling of well being.
Location – Good location of our home on its stand:
Our home is well located on its stand, with all three bedrooms and the lounge north facing.
The stand slopes to the south, which gives the house a good outlook. The slope has also been effectively used, with the two garages (and even a cellar) located under part of the main house.
The property is located on a corner stand with the advantage that there are no neighbours overlooking us. Indeed it is a very private property, with a good outlook due to the slope, so one looks down on the street (height is good for security) and over the trees growing along the Braamfontein Spruit.
Thanks to the good location of the house on the stand, and the fact that it is a corner stand, the land area has been effectively used, with no garden space wasted on driveways.
An independent cottage is located on the south side of the property. It is completely separate from the main house, and both the main house and the cottage enjoy a high degree of privacy. Yet they share the advantage of an increased people presence on the property – a great advantage for higher security.
If our home may interest you…..
Our home of 15 years no doubt has many more features which I have not mentioned…..pressed steel ceilings, warm Oregon floors and doors, a double layer of insulation in the ceiling, a coal box, a spring flowering coral tree, strelitzias, space to hang three canoes and much more!
