For the past three decades That Other Music Shop (TOMS) in Braamfontein has been supplying Joburg with the best quality and price in musical instruments. Besides, TOMS director, Abe Seema is a complete and utter gem and is reason enough for you to visit the shop. Abe himself is a music legend in his own right. The shop sports a basement dedicated to everything related to drumming and is equipped with a studio and sound booth for on the fly recordings. If they don’t have what you are looking for, then they’ll make a plan. Experts litter the showroom floor and are eager to assist you at the drop of a… chime…?
Founded in 1986 by John E. Marshall, Marshall Music has held its place in the South African music industry for almost 30 years, with a then very young Mr. Marshall being the only supplier of marching band and classical instruments in South Africa. Since their humble beginnings the shop has upgraded and added on dramatically and is today known as one of the top retailers in the country. From chimes to 12 string guitars, Marshall’s the place to be.

This store started as a little shop in Roodepoort and I remember it being the first musical instrument store I’ve ever visited. A friend and I went in there with a bunch of coins to buy plectrums for our guitars – I played bass with a pick back then, do forgive me. Strangely enough the guy who assisted us that day still works for Music Mate, at their Cresta branch. Do yourself a favour and check them out, maybe go make some cool memories of your own while you’re at it.
Situated in Randburg on Malibongwe Drive, Turnkey music is actually a distributor of some of the biggest brands in musical instruments. From Vox to to Korg it’s all under one roof. Thankfully Turnkey has a retail store right next to their head office. Pop in and pluck a few strings.
