Burkleigh House – A Peaceful Hideaway in Randburg!

I come from a small town about an hour away from Joburg (think Randfontein, Carltonville – yup, that far west of the West Rand!), and I must say that I was ecstatic when I finally moved to the big city. I no longer had to travel for over an hour to head to the nearest decent shopping centre and I was finally in the hustle and bustle of the city, where I always wanted to be. But sometimes, when the busy city life gets a bit much, I tend to miss the tranquillity of my hometown. Which is why I was so excited to discoverBurkleigh House – tucked away in the quiet suburb of Randburg, this tranquil little spot made me feel like I was right at home!

With its large, spacious gardens (complete with benches and bird feeders among the trees), sparkling swimming pool and beautiful water feature that greets you when you drive through the gates, this spot is a retreat like no other. This lovely white-painted house has been converted into a bed and breakfast offering luxury accommodation (the house boasts six beautifully furnished rooms with unique Victorian antique pieces), intimate events, high teas and private dinners. The atmosphere of this exquisite little spot is soothing and relaxing, and best of all you cannot hear any evidence of the city nearby. No hooting or rushing cars, no sound pollution or crowds of people – nothing but tranquillity, relaxation and peace.

As we entered the reception area, all I noticed was the stunning Victorian furniture in the room, along with a welcoming and cosy lit fireplace. Crystal and I felt right at home from the moment we walked into the room, and couldn’t help but admire all the décor and unique pieces. Shortly after taking everything in, we had the pleasure of meeting owner, Patricia. She happily told us about Burkleigh House, before showing us each of the beautiful rooms and the rest of the premises. She then introduced us to Abo, Burkleigh Houses’s talented chef who would be preparing our breakfast that morning.

While Abo was whipping up a storm in the kitchen, Crystal and I enjoyed some fresh fruit, fruit juice, and tasty little fruit smoothies that I definitely couldn’t get enough of. If I didn’t have to save room for the main breakfast dish, I probably would’ve finished off each one of the fruit smoothies on the tray. But once Abo’s delicious breakfast creation arrived, I was grateful that I left room for more. She presented us with a beautifully assembled dish of savoury crumpets topped with cottage cheese, crispy bacon, avocado and poached egg with a drizzle of an amazing chive and basil pesto. It was so beautifully done that Crystal and I sat there for a few minutes, just admiring what we had on our plates. And, not only did it look amazing, but it also tasted wonderful. Abo’s delicious breakfast was the perfect way to start off my day and I would happily head back just to see what other culinary delights she has up her sleeve.

Burkleigh House also caters for small business groups (no more than ten per party) if you wish to hold an intimate and relaxed business meeting with clients and colleagues. They also cater for high teas, lunches and small dinners in their luscious gardens, on the patio or in the quaint little dining room. Functions can be arrange for ten people or more and the spot is perfect for small intimate groups. This is the perfect setting if you are looking to host a baby shower or bridal party high tea owing to its stunning gardens and décor.

With its ideal location, stunning architecture and furnishing, Burkleigh House is definitely a home away from home where you can just sit back and relax away from your everyday life.
