Who doesn’t love a big, cheesy pizza with a thin, crisp base? It’s one of my favourite foods! Since moving to Joburg, I made it my mission to find the very best pizza, and I’m happy to report that I’ve found it! This time last year, my boyfriend Nik and I road-tripped up to Knysna from Cape Town for a weekend away.
Over that weekend, we visited Plettenberg Bay for an afternoon, and Nik wanted to visit a certain Italian restaurant for drinks and lunch. It was called Cornuti, and it was fantastic! Then, when I moved up to Jozi, I remembered reading on the back of their menu that they had two Joburg restaurants: one in Illovo and one in Parkhurst. And, so, I decided to try the Illovo one out.
My first visit to Cornuti Illovo was in May. Since then, I’ve been back many times – the last time being a few weekends again with my dad and aunt – two authentic Italians! The restaurant is hidden away in a rather unnoticeable centre called Illovo Square on Rivonia Road. The centre is wonderfully quiet, though (and, can you believe, offers free parking too?!), which is great. As soon as we arrived we sat down at a table outside. There’s a lovely inside and outside section. Our waiter was very kind and friendly, and immediately brought us a big bottle of sparkling water to share. Then, we got stuck into reading the menu. Oh, decisions!
I ordered my favourite, the Puttana (pizza Bianca with bacon, feta, spinach and avocado for R96), my dad went with the La Collina (gorgonzola, bacon, avocado, chilli and garlic for R96), and my aunt chose the Verdure (artichokes, asparagus, olives, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and sundried tomatoes for R89). Our food arrived rather promptly, and when it did, oh boy, did we tuck in! What I love about the pizzas here is that you can taste they’re topped with quality ingredients. Crispy bacon, ripe avocado and divine cheese. We all tried a slice of one another’s, and agreed that all three pizzas were to-die-for!
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time for dessert, but I didn’t mind that because that pizza really hit the spot for me. Mmm! If you’re looking for real quality pizza in Joburg, go here. Their pastas are outstanding, too – I can tell you that from previous experience. It’s a lovely little spot that’s great for a girls’ lunch or a romantic date. I can’t wait to try the Parkhurst restaurant next! I’m perfectly sure it’s just as remarkable, though.
