Market Theatre and Arts Alive present
Sylvaine Strike’s Coupé
Tuesday, 16th of September – Sunday, 26th of October 2008
Created in collaboration with the company as Sylvaine Strike’s Standard Bank Young Artist Award piece, Coupé opened at the National Arts Festival in 2006 and then moved to the 969 festival in Johannesburg, where it played to sold-out houses and great critical acclaim.
Directed by Sue Pam Grant and devised by the company, Coupé went on to win no less than six Naledi Theatre Awards out of eight nominated categories: Best Set Design; Best Lighting Design; Best Ensemble Piece; Best Cutting Edge Play; Best Actor in a Comedy; Best Actress in a Comedy.
Set in a typically South African train sleeper compartment, also known as a “coupe”, this one-and-a-half hour theatrical journey is exhilarating, hilarious and surreal. Three strangers board the train and, to their horror, they discover they are booked into the same Second Class three-sleeper coupé.
Coupé is a profoundly directed piece of original South African theatre. Pam-Grant’s eye is that of an artist, weaving the fabric of dreams and reality, personal and literal journeys, into a tight yarn that is “broek-wettingly” funny and profoundly moving.
