TWENTY of South Africa’s top riders and finest horses will compete for the inaugural Equestria Indoor Showjumping Championship title at the Coca-Cola Dome, Northgate, Johannesburg, from December 2 to 4.

The championships are part of Equestria, a new concept in family entertainment, being introduced to South Africa by Elizabeth Mohr. It promises to be a Christmas extravaganza of fantasy and whimsical displays with an array of speed and showjumping events of international standard. It will be on par with shows in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe.

Mohr is confident that this combination of entertainment and showmanship will be spectacular. She says: “An indoor show of international standard such as Equestria is long overdue in South Africa. In the UK a similar show has been running successfully for 35 years.”

With an estimated 14 000 spectators and about 160 VIP guests expected to attend the three-day event, the show aims to expose animal lovers and the general public to the beauty and thrills of horse-riding and showjumping as never seen before in South Africa.

Each live performance will be crowned with entertaining supporting acts in the build-up to the grand finale – the arrival of Santa Claus in a dazzling horse and dog pantomime.

Breathtaking events will also include a new routine by the ever-popular Lipizzaners, a real children’s fantasy in the Shetland ponies and impressive agility classes for dog lovers to enjoy. A special equestrian fancy-dress event should also delight young and old.

Attractive prizes, including cash incentives totalling R95000.00, will be in the offing to enhance the status of the various events and set the scene for keen competition.

A highlight at this three-day event will, indeed, be an exhibition which offers the local equestrian industry the unique opportunity to showcase its clubs, companies and products in a 1 600-metre hall for the first time. Good news for potential exhibitors is that rentals will be 25 percent lower than for any other indoor venue in South Africa.

An Elves Christmas Village Market is another feature that should prove a big drawcard for festive season shoppers. There will be exclusive hand-crafted trinkets and imported merchandise to choose from to fill Christmas stockings with.
