Escondido in Spanish literally means ‘hidden’ which is a great name for this restaurant because it is nicely nestled in the basement of the Postal Service building in Illovo and almost ‘hidden’ if you do not know what you are looking for. Escondido Tapas and Wine Restaurant offers Spanish cuisine and there is a huge variety of tapas which change all the time.
For those that are not too familiar with the concept of tapas, they are small servings of different foods but what Escondido’s may lack in size they make up for in their variety. Their menu consists of about 24 mains to choose from and they all boast flavours from across the globe, such as smoked chicken spring rolls, calamari, paella, melanzane to seared tuna. They also offer a large assortment of wines for wine lovers and even have their own wine cellar in the restaurant.

Escondido is still one of the best places for fun, shared eating, tapas style. I'm really confused by some of the recent reviews but the food is by no means 'mass produced' or made 'days in advance...

A unique experience to say the least. Great variety and well crafted menu. Reasonably and a tad higher priced. You get what what you asked for. Well presented and plated. Tasty and well thought out...

Warm wine. Tasteless tapas. Avoid. Not worth the effort and totally over priced. Tried 6 tapas and nothing was good
