Featured band of the week… Ménage à Trois

Ménage à Trois is born from the songs and words of talented lyricist Auriel Lefebre. Auriel was joined in 2003 by drummer, Jaco Loots (Gordons Suitcase and former Duusman & Scicoustic) and soon thereafter by bassist, Garth de Meillon (Scicoustic, Dubway, Luna, Natalie Chapman). With the threesome completed, the unique flavour and creativity that is Ménage à Trois soon began to flourish. Ménage à Trois is an exclusive blend of bass driven funk and melodic folk rock with each of the band members contributing their own initiative to the project. The music trancends many different styles and genres, and draws from an array of musical influences, including Ani DiFranco and The Dave Matthews Band.

Proving the versatility of these musicians, frequent guest artists (also featured on the album) are included in Ménage à Trois shows: Lanie van der Merwe joins the band on cello, contributing a raw and classic passion to the music, while guitarist Illimar Neitz (Gordon’s Suitcase and former Four Ounce Freedom) rips it up on the electric, providing poignant guitar riffs and effects. Stefan Smuts, (former The End) joins Auriel for gripping renditions of ‘Voodoo’ and ‘Saturday Night Machinces’. The music is enriched and a whole new dimension is added to the definitive Ménage à Trois sound that supporters have grown to love.

In amongst the music, delicately intertwined and truly poetic, are the soulful and insatiable lyrics penned by Auriel herself. These are not mere words, but offer listeners a completely different perspective as well as genuine emotion. Words that can only be brought fourth by personal life experiences, and the humble wisdom that it leaves behind.

‘These are Birthmarks’ is a project that has developed over the course of four years of dynamic creativity and passion between skilled and open-minded musicians. The band deliberately decided to delay the release of their debut album, in order to allow their compositions to develop naturally and for the dynamic within the band to grow. The end product, Ménage à Trois’ 11 track debut album, marks a time of transition and intense growth for the band as they take the first step towards greater things to come.

Join Ménage à Trois on Tuesday, 27th of March, at Tings ‘an Times for the release of their debut album!
