For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been obsessing over a certain range of nail polishes. And now, I’m going to share my thoughts on this super affordable range of good quality polishes with you! It’s called Essence Colour & Go.
Are you familiar with the cosmetic range Essence? The brand isn’t huge. Here in South Africa they have a small stand at every Clicks and Dis-Chem store. It’s a European brand. The first time I noticed the Essence stand at a local Clicks store, I chuckled and thought to myself, “oh, look, a make-up stand especially for little girls!”, because everything’s bright and candy-coloured. Seriously, take one look at an Essence stand and you’ll think of a candy shop!
Then, being the make-up guru that I am, I strolled over anyway. And I started swatching away! Now, if you know this brand, you’ll know that it’s really cheap – as in, super-duper cheap. So although I wasn’t that impressed by the quality of the products after sussing them out in-store for the first time, I loaded my shopping basket up with lipsticks, lip balms, eye shadows, nail polishes and facial cleansers anyway. It didn’t cost me much, that’s why I did it! Then I went home and started experimenting (confession: it’s what I do whenever I buy new make-up).
So let me tell you about the nail polishes. Now, since I first purchased Essence make-up, I’ve been repurchasing the polishes pictured above ever since. They’re great! As you can see, I’m very much into my nude, pastel nail polishes. But don’t get me wrong, I like bright, coral colours once in a while too (yeah, you see that bright orange polish on the end there).
Let me start with a general review – these nail polishes are great because they’re really inexpensive, and they dry really fast! Do you even know how many times I’ve slapped on one of these polishes just after calling an Uber who’s only five minutes down the road before a night out? That’s how quickly they dry! It’s great. I can’t think of anything worse than painting my nails and having to weight 45 minutes to an hour for them to dry. (Ain’t nobody got time for that!)
I also really love the brush, it’s particularly flat, which makes achieving a smooth, even application pretty effortless. In comparison to other brushes, these cover way more nail in one stroke. In addition, this lovely brush also prevents streaking, which is a problem I have with many nail polish brushes. Also, the rounded shape of these cute little bottles is another thing I really like.
Now for what I don’t like as much, well there’s only one point here: They don’t last long. But when you’re spending so little on a nail polish, do you even expect it stay fresh after washing the dishes, soaking in the bath or having a wild night out? Uh, NO. I don’t, at least.
But what I have found is that if I seal the polish with a good quality top coat, like one by Sally Hansen, for example, they actually can last. I just don’t always have the time to apply a top coat. So yeah, they may chip rather fast and easily, but who cares? When I paint my nails, I get over the colour in one day flat anyway! Then I end up removing the polish and replacing it with a fresh, different colour.
So now that I’ve told you what I do and don’t like about the essence Colour & Go range, let me give you a little insight onto each one of my favourite polishes from the range.
Cotton Candy: This polish is a very, very pale pink (identical to Essie’s Ballet Slippers). It’s subtle and pretty for work. I usually use two or three coats because it’s not that pigmented so applying one coat won’t give your nails much colour.
Cafe Ole: This polish is a very light beige. It’s very pretty and neutral, and you can layer on three or four coats for a gorgeous nude look if you like! I just love beige nails – I think they’re so sophisticated. Especially when you’re dressed in an all black or all white outfit with beige accessories.
Free Hugs: I can’t say I’m a huge fancy of candy floss pink nails, but this polish is cute. Sometimes the little girl in me comes out, okay? I’ve also found that this polish is really lovely when you layer it over a nude or white polish.
Absolutely Blue: I just love this pastel blue polish – it reminds me of Kendall Jenner. I’ve seen her wear this colour on her nails on Keeping Up With The Kardashians a couple of times. It’s gorgeous; what I’d describe as a ‘creme blue’. Super elegant and one that every pastel lover needs in their nail polish collection!
That’s What I Mint!: Have you ever seen or tried Essie’s Mint Candy Apple? This polish is pretty much the exact same – or even better! Because it’s a bit more pigmented, and a tad greener. Because I’m a huge fan of Mint Candy Apple, I was happy to come across this Essence polish. It’s a great (and cheaper) dupe.
Off To Miami!: Only recently did I start plucking up the courage to brave bright, coral nails. Believe it or not, this was the first coral polish I’ve ever owned. And I’m in love with it! I love the bright orange shade; it looks stunning when you’re wearing a royal blue.
So now you have my thoughts on these polishes. I’d love to hear yours! Feel free to leave them in the comments below. Also, please suggest any other polishes from the range that I should try?
