Break away for a weekend or mid-week and enjoy peace and tranquillity at Hornbill Lodge!

Hornbill Lodge offers luxury accommodation in the Riverine Forest on the banks of the Magalies River, in Magaliesburg, South Africa. An ideal location for those needing to be close to the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria or the “Lost City”, but away from the crowds.

The Magalies River

The Magalies River flows strongly all year round attracting a large variety of birds, butterflies and river creatures. The resident Leguaan takes a sunbathe on the rocks in the river! Activities include bird-watching, swimming, walking along, or just relaxing on the river banks. Golf driving range, horse-riding, tennis, squash, hot air ballooning all nearby.

Guest Lodge

The architect-designed Guest Lodge offers superb accommodation in peaceful surroundings – the luxury of the city and the best of the country.

Hornbill Lodge offers superior hotel accommodation that will satisfy even the most fastidious guest. There are 6 spacious, air-conditioned bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and 5-channel DSTV selected bouquet and a superb new self-catering cottage that sleeps 6!

All suites have private entrances and undercover parking. French doors open to the river side onto a small patio and riverine forest.

The comfortable lounge can be used by residents or booked for small conferences or seminars. Besides the excellent air-conditioning, it has a warm fireplace for the colder winter days.

Self Catering Cottage

This quaint 3 bed-roomed cottage with 1 full bathroom and 1 shower/ toilet, sleeps 6. There are 2 rooms each with double beds, 1 room with 2 single beds and air-conditioning in each bedroom. The open plan lounge with plenty of space for relaxation is adjacent to the kitchen/diner with stove, thermo fan oven, microwave oven and fridge. Kitchen is fully equipped when you feel the gourmet chef coming out.

There is ample storage space for sports equipment, etc. Outdoors is a braai (barbeque) area and patio with table and chairs. The bush babies provide sound and entertainment!

The cottage overlooks the forested river banks from patio and Juliet balcony. Early morning the birds swoop past and in the evenings gazing is wonderful. All suites and the cottage are fully serviced daily.

Hornbill Restaurant

The cozy pub area is very popular as a meeting point and the Juke Box adds to the warm atmosphere. The buffet meal, a Hornbill specialty, is always enjoyed by all. Join on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner at Legends. Great menu and delicious country cooking. Bookings essential!

Hornbill Picnic Areas

Hornbill provides all the food and drinks, (even braai and fires etc.), all you need to do is bring a picnic rug, relax and make yourself at home. Leave the clearing up and dishes to them. Bookings essential!

There are four private sites from which you may choose:

Rocky Hollow, a secluded rocky “amphitheater” on the banks of the river almost under the shadow of the beautiful Redelinghuys bridge. Plenty of shade and bird life. Watch the fish jumping.

Rock Pool is the legendary site of Lovers Rock. High cliffs and a large rock pool. (“Daredevils” do jump off here, but Hornbill strictly advise against this – there may be anything under the water!) A beautiful site, but sometimes a little busy as everyone wants to visit the Rock.

Running Waters, sited at a rapid just below the Restaurant, is a lovely spot to river watch. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to spot a Clawless Otter, or one of the small Leguaans. Just the sound of the white waters is enough to wash away the cares of the week!

River Bank, “far away from the madding crowd” is a very secluded, private spot on the banks of the river close to a small waterfall. Birders paradise. Close to 180 species of birds have been identified here along this stretch of the Magalies River. The Hornbill breed in the Bushy Willows during the winter months and are already on the property, courting!
