Where Do Joburg Executive Chefs Hang Out

Our food writer, Shawn Greyling caught up with Chef Marnus Scholly of the Clico Hotel to chat about pinapple on pizza, his favourite coffee spot in town, and the best gourmet dinner not made by him.

Marnus Scholly

Chef Marnus Scholly is quite a reserved kind of guy but a lot of fun once you get to know him. We pick his brains about all things foodie-related to the greatest culinary city in the world (move over, Los Angeles, we’re taking the throne). Read on and learn more about Jozi’s sensory secrets.

You’ve got 30 minutes to squeeze in a quick breakfast, where do you go?

The Wippet in Linden. Love the outdoor street vibe. And something about that couch.

Who roasts the best coffee in Joburg?

Urban grind in Parkhurst. Please check out the back yard area. Perfect to escape the hustle.

Is there a fast food menu item that you simply can’t get enough of?

A good pizza with a cold beer. Crisp and fresh. And please, thin base only. And NO PINEAPPLE.

Where do you go to get your Mexican food fix?

Salsa Mexican Grill. Original Burrito is just great. Love the flavours.

When it comes to fine dining, who does it right?

Adriaan Maree at Fermier in PTA.

Who has the best decor and design in Joburg?

Marble, the view is great. And that wine cellar is stunning.

When you have friends or family visiting from out of town, which restaurant do you take them to?

I love the urban vibe of Che Argentine. The rustic grill area, and the whole factory feeling fits in well with the Maboneng culture. The music is great, and what better to have a fillet on the bone.

It’s payday and you feel like having a big, gourmet dinner. Where do you go?

Urbanologi – Always something new. A big treat if you want to treat your taste buds.
