Not elegant flirtation of Western Ballroom, nor the rhythm-led sway of salsa, but complicated, grown-up passion – a connection between the heat of the music and sensuality of the dance.

The hottest young Tango company from Buenos Aires will present its thrilling new show TANGO FIRE at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre in 2006.

Featuring ten torrid dancers accompanied by a quartet of brilliant young musicians and one of Argentina’s finest singers, TANGO FIRE offers a journey through the history of Tango – the world’s most alluring and exciting dance.

Tango – Argentina’s gift to the world. The very word evokes sensuality and intrigue, lust and provocation, raw energy and knife-edge precision. This most intoxicating of dances emerged in Buenos Aires at the turn of the twentieth century. Born in the brothels and taverns of the city, Tango was the dance of the fugitive, pimp and immigrant, achieving its own body language in the hip-to-hip advance and retreat of the mating dance.

Sensuous, but not salacious – once condemned and banned by the Cardinals of Rome for its erotic power – Tango helped fire the twentieth century domination of popular dance crazes by the music of The Americas.

TANGO FIRE traces the history of Tango, from its origins in the red light district of Buenos Aires to the glamour of the Roaring Twenties; and its evolution to the world of contemporary dance accompanied by the music of the great Astor Piazzolla, Rodriquez, Pugliese and others.

ESTAMPAS PORTEÑAS was founded in Buenos Aires in 1996 by the distinguished Argentine ballerina and choreographer, Carolina Soler. The success of this young company has been phenomenal. It has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America to high acclaim and now – for the first time and for two weeks only – this extraordinarily exciting show can be seen in South Africa.

“It has been one of my dreams to bring a genuine Argentinean Tango show to the Civic Theatre’s audiences,” says Bernard Jay, the theatre’s CEO. “Such shows have been a staple of annual Broadway and West End product since my youth. TANGO FIRE beautifully compliments our policy of presenting the finest in world class entertainment.”

TANGO FIRE is presented in Johannesburg by Hocking & Vigo and Andrew Kay and Associates in association with M-Net.

Performances are from Tuesday to Thursday at 8pm, Fridays at 6pm and 9pm, Saturdays at 5pm and 8pm and on Sundays at 3pm.
