Jozi’s Favourite Smokehouses

They may be few and far apart but we love them nonetheless. Here is our short and sweet list of smokehouses that you simply need to check out.

The Smokehouse And Grill

Who would have thought that Braamfontein would be the place to get your smoked meat treats on. Grab your fill of “real Southern styled barbeque” at The Smokehouse And Grill where the drinks always flow and the atmosphere is constantly pumping. It goes without saying that the ribs come highly recommended and are served with chips. These babies come in four different styles. We also suggest you to try the Piggy In A Hole burger which is a beef patty topped with pulled pork.

Hogshead

Known for its collection of craft beer, late nights and stellar staff, Hogshead also packs a mean menu. Filled with steaks, ribs and other cuts of beef, Hogshead prides itself in being one of the best known undercover smokehouses in the city… undercover meaning they don’t throw it all over the place. We recommend the crispy bacon stack, pulled pork spring rolls and the smoked halloumi salad. All these items are smoked by Hogshead, so you know it’s going to be good.

Blacksteer

Back in the day, folks used to stand in queues waiting to grab a rack or three of ribs at Blacksteer. And there was a time when this restaurant chain fell off the face of the earth… Well, that was until last year when this infamous brand swung back with a vengeance. Go ask your parents about the ribs at Blacksteer – they’ll spin you tales followed by drooling mouths. Fortunately, Blacksteer made a huge comeback at the end of 2016 and now they’re popping up franchises like crazy. Their smoke menu is epic. From pulled pork to their famous ribs, Blacksteer smokes anything and everything tasty. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
