The year was 1951. The competition was the first Miss World pageant, introduced as part of the ‘Festival of Britain’ celebrations, and it was the audience it attracted who guaranteed its success. Thanks to founder Eric Morley’s PR expertise, the first Miss World pageant welcomed a global audience greater than international events like the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Beauty with a purpose – that’s what Miss World is all about. In the last 25 years the pageant has raised more than $400 million for benefactors such as the Nelson Mandela Trust, Canada’s Cops For Cancer, Variety Clubs International, Operation Hunger, and the SOS Children’s Villages which cares for orphaned and abandoned children in 132 countries.
Miss World is set to break new records in 2009 and a spectacular itinerary is currently being prepared for the 120 contestants from around the globe.
