Nelson Mandela once said: “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” So be part of a more compassionate society by either contributing, donating or volunteering at one of these orphanages to make the lives of orphans in Johannesburg happier and better.

Johannesburg Children’s Home

Johannesburg Children’s Home is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that caters to children between the ages of
3 and 18 years old. The children here are survivors of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Some are also AIDS orphans while others are HIV positive. Due to the neglect and abuse experienced by these children, they have an educational gap, which this NPO caters to with special needs education. They are also offer therapy to ensure the children develop and grow holistically.

Malaika Orphanage Centre

Located in Hillbrow, Malaika Orphanage Centre supports children affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, abandonment and neglect. Malaika offers basic needs such as food, school support, clothes, sanitation and care for children without homes and under-privileged families. There is also a day care for children not yet in school, and afternoon activities for those in school.

Impilo 

Impilo provides children’s protection and adoption services for those who have or are considering adoption. In South Africa, over 2000 children are abandoned every year yet they need support and care just like any other child does. Help Impilo help these children by donating, volunteering or adopting a child. And remember, special needs children need loving homes too.

Mother Of Peace

Mother of Peace Community is a non-profit organisation that works to restore family values – based on Catholic Church beliefs – to orphaned and vulnerable children. Putting the children’s needs first, this organisation ensures that children are heard, have a sense of belonging, are loved and grow up in a happy family environment. Living in a house of six children and a house mother, children are offered emotional support and attention.

Baby Haven

Baby Haven caters to abandoned and orphaned babies in Johannesburg, many of whom are healthy children of HIV-positive parents. Baby Havens provides a home and a loving environment to nurture the children. Since 2003, Baby Havens has been a place of safety for hundreds of children, and most of them have been adopted. Baby Haven serves as the link between the babies and their adoptive ‘forever families’.
