Saturday, 15th and Sunday, 16th of September 2007
Come on Summer …. Hot languid days, feverish waves, refreshing tastes, Mojito’s and the indefatigable beat of the sun… At the POSITIVE Summer Festival at the Valley of Waves at Sun City on Saturday, 15th and Sunday, 16th of September 2007, there is something for everyone on the playbill. So bring your sun block, bikini, and shades – it’s a safe bet you’ll have a party!
Sun International proved that they can without a doubt deliver the best entertainment in Africa and can rival even the most glamorous events in Europe, with their latest explosion of POSITIVE, held in June this year at Sun City. The charity fundraiser in aid of Tapologo AIDS Hospice, Noah, St Michaels and Missionvale Care Centre, was held from Friday, 15th of June to Sunday, 17th of June at Sun City and delivered on all style fronts. Fashionista’s, South Africa’s A-list, Jozi’s elite movers and shakers, and international and local media were presented with a visual feast of music, fashion, food and art.
And now Sun International’s POSITIVE Summer Festival looks fit to do it all over again, with a more local flava thanks to broadcast partners; Kyknet, MK89, Supersport and Jacaranda 94.2.
On Saturday, 15th of September, The Valley of Waves will come alive to the sounds of South African music legends; Eden, Karen Zoid, Obita, Hip Hop Pantsula and Springbok Nude Girls.
Her wild rock antics, rebellious lyrics and mega-watt attitude, have her fans banging on the door for more. Karen Zoid is the leader of a new generation of Afrikaans music and the Valley will not be quite the same after she’s rocked the joint.
Zoid burst onto the music scene in 2001 with her debut album, ‘Poles Apart’ – an emotional, cerebral and palliative album that literally rocked SA, to such an extent that Karen Zoid became an icon of the South African youth, which the press renamed the Zoid Generation. In 2004 both Time Magazine and US News & World Report highlighted her role as an icon.
Eden, South Africa’s number one pop group tore up the radio waves with three SAMA-nominations ….plus a platinum album. Eden’s latest combined English/Afrikaans album ‘Eden’ recently reached platinum status, and appears on the top 10 playlist of many regional and national radio stations across the country. Eden was voted one of the top 5 selling Afrikaans artists in Huisgenoot’s Top 20 and this innovative Boy Band has reached the ranks of the most desirable Afrikaans group in the country. If you don’t believe it, then check them out for yourself at POSITIVE Summer.
Obita is gaining ground on the SA rapper / hip hop scene. The Obita experience is a unique combination of rock guitarist, scratch DJ, and classical back up vocalist. This amazing blend of the band members is what makes Obita an unforgettable and truly original musical experience. ‘Move You’ will have you shaking your booty – the beat is both pulsating and addictive.
Edward Castro Oola Obita is the band’s founding member and front man and since the release of his first album Warrior in 2004, he’s assembled a superior band. Their music is intelligent and influential. The musical content ranges from meaningful rap to just get-down-and-party vibes! SL magazine & Levi’s were so impressed by their music and international quality that they featured the band on their Levi’s Young Guns Tour. The band just recently got back from Oppikoppi festival and everyone is talking about their highly rated performance.
And that’s not all for hip hop fans – Jabulani Tsambo (Hip Hop Pantsula), SA’s most stylish Hip Hop Act will deliver an incredible performance. True to his lyrics, his most recent release YBA 2 NW is styling indeed. What’s great about this artist apart from his interesting mix of languages and beats – is his electrifying energy. Get caught in the cross-fire at POSITIVE Summer!
The Springbok Nude Girls, with Arno Carstens started performing live again at the end of 2006. This 5 year reunion of the original line up has fans jumping for joy. They started their new presence with a headline performance at the MTV Alert event at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, in Johannesburg in September, 2006, and they then played two headline shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire (with Prime Circle and The Parlotones) in November 2006.
Reformed due to popular demand and with all five original members in tact – the Nude Girls are taking on the world-at-large. Spearheading this drive is the group’s first studio album in five years – Peace Breaker – released March 2007 along with numerous local and international tour dates.
Springbok Nude Girls is named after the glamour models that graced compilation album covers of the old and long-since defunct, predominantly Afrikaans local radio station, Springbok Radio. These models were fairly scantily clad and titillating for the time, and considered to be fairly shocking in the Calvinistic and conservative social climate of 1950s South Africa. With this in mind, POSITIVE Summer will pay homage to SA Sports Illustrated bikini clad babes. Oh yes! The hottest bods in town will be at the Valley of Waves.
And that’s not all… On Sunday, 16th of September, POSITIVE Summer brings you the best in Afrikaans entertainment; Kurt Darren, Irene Van Wyk, Theuns Jordaan, Nádine, Karen Ferreira, Dozi, Etienne Steyn and Pieter Koen.
Get set for the explosive talent of one of South Africa’s foremost superstars, Nádine. With eight solo albums, a SAMA nomination and various gold and platinum awards, Nádine is a serious and established artist.
Her latest album As jy Wonder has just been released and Nádine will take the audience through many of the tracks from this popular pop rock album.
Irene Van Wyk ‘s performance is a celebration of local culture particularly Afrikaans and offers fans a feast of music ranging from rock, to pop, jazz to country. Since Irene’s dèbut she has come to be recognised as one of the most diverse singers in South Africa. She sings in Afrikaans & English, performs jazz & rock with equal ease & her sultry, sensual voice is one of a kind, earning her nickname, The Voice. Irene has performed as guest artist with international artists such as Smokie and Bad Boys Blue as well as several South African superstars.
Etienne Steyn is a fairly newcomer to the Afrikaans musical scene however, he has captured the hearts of many fans. He completed the recording of his debut album in August 2005 and has wowed audiences with his “Baby love van my”, “Storie van my Hart”, “Happy Dayz” and “Sugar up my Lollipop” which reached number 21 on the 5 FM Top 40.
Kurt Darren is an established recording artist in South Africa. He shot to stardom after recording his number one hit single ‘Meisie-Meisie’. This was soon followed by a string of hits including ‘Se net ja’, ‘Loslappie’ and ‘Hemel op Tafelberg’ to name only a few. Kurt’s live show is energetic and he is famous for his unique dance moves.
Theuns Jordaan has taken the South African music scene by storm. His true interpretation of old Afrikaans songs and some of his original numbers has made him a real hit with his fans. With his deep bass like voice. Theuns draws crowds by the thousands to every performance so make sure you have a ticket to Sunday’s performance. With songs like ‘Soos Bloed’ and his timeless classic ‘Beautiful in Beaufort-Wes’, he’ll croon his way straight into your heart.
With her unfailing energy and extrovert personality, Karen Ferreira really lights up the stage with songs like No No Never, All I Want, Save The Best For Last and In My Drome. She brings over her pulsing rhythms with a tomboy-energy. She’s blond, young, beautiful and destined for great things.
After a very successful debut album ‘Mercy’, Dozi has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most loved artists in South Africa. He is one of the very few musicians in SA that has a fan base that not only crosses age boundaries, but also cultural boundaries.
His latest Afrikaans CD, ‘Kruispad’ reached gold status shortly after its release. This album captures Dozi’s amazing versatile talent and his ability to sing from the heart, whether it is a ballad or a humorous song.
Sun City’s second Positive bash this year offers a weekend of entertainment, celebrating survival. Make waves – get a ticket.
“POSITIVE Summer will help to carry on our AIDS fundraising initiative and enable us to sustain the awareness over a longer period, thus providing two exciting opportunities to generate funds for the Tapologo Aids Hospice and it’s national partners,” says Philip Georgas, Divisional Director Sun International Resorts and Chairman of POSITIVE.
