Aucklandpark – From 01 May 2016 Rea Vaya will be changing its trips payment process by replacing the cash-on-card system with its new points product. All cash already loaded on to passengers’ cards will automatically be converted to points – one point is equal to R1.00. The bus company, which carries around 50 000 passengers a day, will not be charging a loading fee any more and cards may be topped up at any Rea Vaya Self-Service Vending Machines. The cards cost R25 each. These machines use all major debit and credit cards except for Diners Club or American Express. Commuters will also be able to load points at cashier booths, ABSA ATMs and main Rea Vaya stations. Bonus points of up to 25% may be earned (on a sliding scale depending on the amount of points loaded) from 01 May until 30 June.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Councillor Christine Walters says the city is delighted to launch the points system as it offers “real benefits for Joburg’s commuters”.
“Our aim is to ensure that public transport in the city is fast, safe, reliable and affordable. The new Rea Vaya points system and vending machines will make travelling on Rea Vaya easy and hassle-free, while offering our customers real savings,” says Councilor Walters. Rea Vaya staff have been trained in using the new system and will assist commuters to adapt to the new protocol.
Commuters may download the Rea Vaya App – which is only available for Microsoft Mobile users at present. The application enables bus users to take their trips while having the information at their finger tips. It allows commuters to see their bus routes, find vendors near their bus stops and see the routes ahead. The application, developed by Macgriffiths, also gives an estimated bus fare when travelling to pre-entered destinations.
