The trick behind bistro-styled food is to approach the average with an extraordinary eye. That is the dogma that childhood friends and business partners Hezron Louw and Andrew Leeuw had in mind when they started Sumting Fresh, a catering company and food stall, after a chance meeting in 2012.
With a shared passion for food, they took to the streets of Midrand, operating their experimental kitchen out of a food trailer. The dynamic pair quickly built a reputation for the freshest, most original and straight-up delicious street food in Johannesburg.
“We have super exciting news that we are launching a double decker ‘BUS-taurant’ in October,” says Sumting Fresh staffer Jean Huddy, “We have converted a double decker bus into a mobile catering kitchen, with a restaurant on the top floor with the roof off. It’s going to be an amazing experience to sit upstairs, enjoy our food and a view over Johannesburg.”
The real secret to Sumting Fresh’s success is their signature chicken dish: “Our most popular item on the menu is the Goujon Chicken – we crumb chicken strips with our secret seasoned crumb, and deep fry to crisp perfection. This is served with a seasonal side-salad and shoestring fries. Our sauces are our home made aioli and sweet chilli sauce – nothing is premade, or bought.” Jean goes on to say that their sweet chilli sauce is a recipe that they developed, and one that has become really popular – everyone wants a jar of it to take home.
In recent times, the consumers of good food have picked up on the fact that the fresher the ingredients, the better the taste and with two thumbs up it’s clear that Hezron and Andrew have taken that fact to heart. All cheeses, fruits and veggies used in their dishes are completely fresh. On top of the good food, these street food moguls also serve fruity jam jar cocktails!
Sumting Fresh can be found at The Neighbourgoods Market, Braamfontein every Saturday 9am-3pm, and The Fourways Farmers’ Market, Fourways every Sunday 10am-3pm.
