The Festival announcement took place on the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication on May 17 and Godfrey Mautloa of the Soweto tourism Organisation and owner of Masakeng Pub and Grill welcomed media and friends, “We are most excited about this initiative with SAMFA as the Mushroom Festival affords institutions in Soweto a wonderful opportunity to showcase their ability to innovate. Mushrooms have always been perceived as somewhat of a mysterious ingredient in cooking, and besides grilling them, people have always been a little unsure of how to prepare them. The aim of the festival is to illustrate the versatility and flavour profile of mushrooms, and to show that there is so much more that one can do with mushrooms besides cream or crumb them!
Added SAMFA chairman, Ross Richardson, “As a concept, the original Mushroom Festival has been running for 6 years and is seen as the perfect opportunity to heighten consumer awareness of fresh cultivated mushrooms and their incredible versatility, flavour profile and nutritional value. SAMFA is absolutely thrilled with this exciting extension of the Mushroom Festival into Soweto because it allows us to reach a hugely important market sector in an innovative and interactive way. What could be better than giving people an opportunity to sample a relatively new product in a familiar and trusted environment?”
Soweto Restaurants will run extensive mushroom menus over the 3-day period of the Festival and they will encourage their patrons to try out their mushroom creations. The diversity of the establishments participating promises exciting interpretations of fresh cultivated mushrooms.
