Packed House Productions, the acclaimed producer of recent smash-hit productions such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, now brings you Soweto Story – a sparkling new South African musical in the spectacular Broadway tradition.
Soweto Story has its world premiere on Saturday, 24th of March 2007 in the Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre Complex. The season runs until Sunday, 13th of May 2007. This unique production is an original and proudly South African musical created in the magnificent style of the West End and Broadway musical. What West Side Story did with Romeo & Juliet for Broadway, Soweto Story does for South Africa with the greatest love story of all time. This is the largest and most extravagant new South African musical to have its premier at the Civic Theatre in a very long time. The production is earmarked for an international tour.
The production has been created by a team led by acclaimed South African dramatist and producer, Deon Opperman, with some of the finest South African talent – Quincy Myeza, Stephen Simm and Genna Lewis. The dazzling original musical score was composed by Zwai Bala and Janine Neethling, who are also the Musical Directors. The rest of the production team includes award-winning names such as Stan Knight as Set Designer, Sarah Roberts as Costume Designer and Adele Blank as Choreographer. Star-studded from top to bottom.
When asked why Packed House Productions decided to create and produce Soweto Story, Opperman said: “We decided to use the love story of Romeo and Juliet because Bernstein, who was a genius, proved with West Side Story that this eternal and great Shakespearian drama could be adapted into a contemporary musical with resounding success.”
As with the previous two productions, Soweto Story will also be produced in proud association with ABSA.
Packed House Productions was founded in 2003 by the well–known dramatist and theatre personality, Deon Opperman, who was joined in 2004 by experienced producer, Paul Berning. A founding member, and later Festival Manager, of the Aardklop National Arts Festival, Giep van Zyl, was appointed as Executive Director of Packed House Productions in November 2005. In line with its vision of “taking South African entertainment into the 21st century”, audiences can expect musicals and other productions of the highest quality and entertainment.
