Lately, I seem to have had this constant sense that I’m in a rut. Just keeping my head above water. I’m forever trying to catch up, stay in touch and be where I’m supposed to be when I’m supposed to be there. I bought a new pair of jeans in March, but I’ve never worn them because I’ve never had a chance to get them hemmed. The last book I remember curling up with is Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret – and that was in Standard 4. I floss while loading the washing machine, while defrosting lamb chops, while searching for the ever elusive TV remote.
“I need a night out to spread my wings” I moaned to my friend Carla. “I just have to expand and travel out of my Ghetto”.
As a result of my new found sense of “needing to get out” – I’ve decided to start small by exploring our gorgeous city of Joburg. And I’m happy to announce that I have found a new kind of gem that this City of Gold has to offer. Limelight – a Restaurant of Note – is situated in the Rivonia Crossing Centre, Sunninghill. Limelight has become a screaming success due to its theatrical nature. Imagine this: you walk into what you think is an ordinary restaurant, and next minute you are donned in shiny hats and feather boas. The waitstaff are harmonising while your food is served, and then each of them take turns on the stage. WOW is all I can say, totally unexpected!
The food was sensational, and presented as works of delectable art. I would highly recommend their array of fillet steaks (especially the Mustard flavour. Yum!) There is also a comprehensive list of of meat, poultry and seafood – fit for any type of taste bud.
You might not find Liza Minnelli on the Menu, however there is a diva by the name of Pam who is just waiting to be discovered. The most interesting fact about Limelight is that all of the waitstaff are undiscovered but EXTREMELY talented performers and students of the arts – singers, instrumentalists, stand-up comedians and impersonators. Limelight has given these talented individuals a platform to showcase their particular talent at the same time as allowing them to make a living. And their service in addition to their exceptional skills is unquestionably friendly and efficient.
Renowned restaurateurs, cousins Mark and Jeff Nofal, are responsible for Johannesburg’s latest fantastic concept restaurant. And Limelight is a beautiful marriage of their passions – Food and Entertainment.
Limelight also offers themed evenings, band nights, dinner dance evenings, Sunday night jazz and live entertainment on the terrace on Sunday afternoons. I’d highly recommend this venue for year end functions, birthday parties, bachelorette parties, product launches, wedding receptions, and corporate functions.
My evaluation: If you’re looking to have a quiet meal then this is not the place, but if you’re looking for fun, entertainment and good food – then look no further. I have a feeling this venue will be booked out fairly often – I suggest calling to book for your function asap. Especially on Thursday nights!
