The Top 10 Milkshakes In Joburg

The next time you get a craving for a thick and creamy milkshake, look no further than this list of the top 10 spots to find such a delight… what diet?!

Milkshakes

Dollhouse

The best part about Dollhouse is that you don’t even have to leave the car when paying them a visit. This drive-in has been around for ages and is an icon in itself. Their milkshakes can be ordered double thick if you like (yes, do it) and come in all the classic flavours, like chocolate and banana as well as Milo and Horlicks. Do yourself a favour and have one with a toasted chicken mayo sarmie… you’ll feel like you’re in fast food heaven!

Where: 377 Louis Botha Avenue, Highlands North, Johannesburg.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice!

This hotel is renowned for its delectable milkshakes that come in all kinds of crazy flavours… you can even order alcoholic milkshakes to really get the party started. Some mouth-watering (non-alcoholic) options include Aero Attack, made with real Aero, Ouma en Oupa, made with carrot cake and rooibos (our personal fave) and Salted Caramel Popcorn. Can you even?

Where: 22 Whitley Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

Craft

Craft makes crazy shakes… their combos are out of this world! And their presentation is on point – they look so good you almost won’t want to tuck in… almost. Try out their Salted Caramel Delight, which is filled with real crème brûlée, cheesecake, salted caramel, caramel-filled chocolate and caramel sauce. Decadence has just been taken to a new level… and you’re going to love it.

Where: 33 4th Avenue, Corner 13th Street, Parkhurst, Johannesburg.

Roast Café

Melrose Arch’s Roast Café has quickly become known for its desserts… but the milkshakes here definitely stand out from the crowd. They’ve got a Double Chocolate Shake, they’ve got a Fresh Strawberry shake and… wait for it… they’ve got a Caramelised Almond Biscotti flavoured shake – that’s just ridiculous… in the best way.

Where: 10A High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

Kota Joe

Another roadhouse, this gem is quickly becoming famous for its milkshakes. Flavours include Zoo Biscuit, Coco Pops, Crunchie, Peanut Butter and Banana, Lindt and Toblerone… they’ve even got a Nutella version! Who could possibly turn that down?

Where: 141 North Rand Road, Boksburg, East Rand.

13 Van Riebeeck Avenue, Edenvale, East Rand.

112, Kingsway Student Centre, University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

Gandhi Square, Shop AS01, Vusa House, 8 New Street South, Marshalltown, Johannesburg.

Hudsons

The milkshake selection at Hudsons features stand outs like House Made Fudge flavour and BarOne… yum! They’ve got Oreo shakes, Lindt Brownie versions and even alcoholic milkshakes, like Kahlua and Espresso, and Amarula and Toasted Marshmallow. Throw a burger into the mix and you’ve done a good job!

Where: Corner 4th Avenue and 14th Street, Parkhurst, Johannesburg.

Brooklyn Brothers

Another burger spot makes it onto this list – simply because burgers and shakes have got to be one of the best combos of all time, don’t you agree? The Red Velvet Milkshake is something else, as is the Key Lime Pie shake… who even thinks of these things? On top of those, they’ve also got a Berries and Buttermilk option as well as a Roasted Marshmallow concoction!

Where: Bedford Centre, Corner of Smith Road and Van der Linde Road, Bedfordview, Johannesburg.

Dukes

The milkshakes at Dukes come topped with whipped cream – doesn’t that remind you of classic shakes from back in the day? Their options are mouth watering and include Home Made Brownie flavour, Bubble Gum (retro!), Chocolate Ganache and Strawberry Cheese Cake. They’ve got alcoholic shakes too – we recommend the Marilyn Monroe, which is Frangelico, gold tequila and Amarula, blended with cream and ice cream.

Where: 14 Gleneagles Road, Greenside, Johannesburg

Melt Chocolate

There’s no way that this place could possibly produce milkshakes that are anything short of excellent. Their flavours are basic but, man, are they tasty. Pick between chocolate, vanilla, coffee, strawberry, chai or Horlicks and enjoy! If you’ve got room, order a crunchy chocolate spring roll to go with it… hey, you might as well go all out.

Where: Nicolway Shopping Centre, William Nicol Drive, Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Walnut Grove

Walnut Grove is an institution. It’s been a go-to destination in Sandton for many… and for good reason! Their shakes can be made double thick upon request (definitely recommended) and they’ve got all the classics, plus some of their own creations… choose between everything from bubblegum and vanilla to Snowball White Chocolate, Nutty Nutella and Nuts, and a Red Velvet Shake – wow!

Where: Sandton City Shopping Centre, Corner 5th and Maude Streets, Sandton, Johannesburg.
