Wolves is pretty well-known for its cakes and treats. This coffee shop is a haven for those with a sweet tooth – they’ve got it all, from hummingbird to carrot, but the real winner here would have to be their red velvet cake… it’s to-die-for and the portion you receive when you order a slice is huge – you might want to share it.
Where: 4 Corlett Drive, Illovo, Johannesburg.
The various Woolworths Cafés in Joburg boast stunning displays of cakes on any given day. Just looking at them is enough to get you drooling. It helps that they make great coffee, too – cake and coffee just go so well together, don’t you think? Order yourself a flat white and a slice of whatever catches your eye – it’s all good here.

Château Gâteaux Patisserie
This is a cake lover’s paradise. Château Gâteaux Patisserie is home to a wide range of delectable desserts. They even serve up mini cakes so that you can satisfy your sweet tooth without overdoing it… or eat three different cakes in one sitting – the choice is yours! You can also walk away with a whole cake (and even pretend you baked it yourself, if you like). Cakes that really stick out from their menu are the Double Decker and the Black Forest Gâteaux.
Where: Shop 20A, Thrupps Illovo Centre, 204 Oxford Road, Illovo, Johanesburg.
Where: Shop 16, Riverside Shopping Centre, Corner Bryanston Drive and The River Road, Bryanston, Johannesburg.
The Patisserie is where you will find some of the best cheesecake in town. Don’t get me wrong, their other cakes are pretty fantastic, but their cheesecake is the one that really stands out. Pull up a chair and get ready to indulge, you won’t be sorry!
Where: Post Office Centre, 30 Rudd Road, Illovo, Johannesburg.
The Zone @ Rosebank, 177 Oxford Road, Rosebank, Johannesburg.
Life Grand Café
While Life Grand Café is known for salads and savoury foods, their cakes are something else. Chances are, if you sit down for a meal, you won’t be able to leave without sampling one of their treats – they really get to you, sitting in that display window, looking all delicious! The mini carrot cakes win us over every time… if you don’t have room for one after your meal, take one home – you’ll thank yourself later.

Hyde Park Corner, Corner Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Drive, Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

When it comes to cake, Fournos Bakery gets it right every time. Whether you’re sitting down for a slice or have a special occasion that you don’t feel like baking for, Fournos is consistently good. Take your pick from their mouth-watering cake display but their mini cheesecakes, topped with berry compote, are simply divine.

A gem in the Parktown North area, Moemas makes cakes that are out of this world. If you get a sudden craving for something sweet, get over here and order up something – you’ll be sorted out in no time. Their cakes tend to vary but, rest assured, your sweet tooth will be taken care of… and then some!
Where: Parktown Quarter, Corner 3rd & 7th Avenues, Parktown North, Johannesburg.
Every time we walk past Walnut Grove in Sandton, we slow down and stare. Their cake display is so distracting, how is one to shop in such conditions? The cake that really catches our eye would have to be the rainbow one – it’s just so beautiful you almost won’t want to take a bite out of it… almost. Try a slice for yourself and you’ll soon understand what we’re going on about.
Where: Sandton City Shopping Centre, Corner 5th and Maude Streets, Sandton, Johannesburg.
Vovo Telo’s cakes always seem to call our name… if ever you’ve been to this bakery, we have no doubt that you will feel the same way. Try leaving without having a slice, we dare you – it’s near impossible! Pick whichever one tickles your fancy and indulge… you can’t go wrong here!

The home made cakes at JB’s Corner are consistently delectable. Their display is enough to make you forget about any healthy eating plan you were thinking of sticking to. The slices are sharing size (but we won’t judge if you wolf one down yourself) and are just the right amount of sweet – enjoy!
Where: 3 High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
Sandton City Shopping Centre, Corner 5th and Maude Streets, Sandton, Johannesburg.
