Braaing is what us South Africans do best! And with National Braai Day (or Heritage Day if you will) just around the corner, I’m pretty sure you are looking for some spots to fire up the braai and get some steaks on the grill with friends and family. Here are my top 10 spots to celebrate our heritage in Joburg.



Zoo Lake  Parkhurst

Busy over the weekends, Zoo Lake is a popular hangout spot for young and old, offering you a great space to have a relaxed day out, lazing on the green grass, braaing up some lekker steaks for your picnic and watching the kids play on the jungle gyms. If you want to cool down, you can take a paddle in the man-made lake.

Innesfree Park  Sandton

Join Innesfree Park for National Braai Day with Castle Lager in an attempt to break the world record for most people braaing at the same time! Rally up the friends and enjoy a great day of braaing, some of SA’s top acts and ice cold Castle Lager to keep you cool and refreshed. Braai drums will be provided at the venues. Wemmer Pan/Pioneer Park

This spot holds rowing competitions and flower shows during the summer, and is definitely a great place to kick back and relax outdoors! Wemmer Pan (or Pioneer Park) is the perfect place to have a picnic with friends and family. And if you wish to braai, be sure to bring your own portable braai stand, meat, tongs, herbs, the works. And the adventure park is ideal for kids.

Gillooly’s  Bedfordview

Gillooly’s offers you great braai facilities, beautiful scenery and enough room for you to run around and play sports. Ladies, you can sunbathe on the soft grass while the men monkey around and show off their braaing skills this Heritage Day! Be sure to stock up on some refreshing beverages (alcohol is allowed) and pack a picnic basket with yummy treats. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Rietvlei Farm – Between Alberton and Mulbarton

If you want to spend Heritage day with the family, Rietvlei Farm is offering you a great day of fun and sun and outdoor entertainment! From 10:00 to 17:00 this Heritage Day, enjoy carnival rides, tractor and pony rides for the kids, putt-putt and more! There will also be food, drink and market stalls for you to browse through. Entrance to the farm is R30 for adults, R20 for children and R10 for pensioners. Bring your own braai or hire a braai drum for R30.

Pines Resort  Krugersdorp

For a day out in the sun with family and friends, make your way to Pines Resort out in Krugersdorp for an afternoon of braaing and water slides! Relax and fire up some chops on the braai, find a great spot to have a picnic and keep cool with Pines Resort’s swimming pools and test out their three water slides for some fun. They are open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 to 17:00, and entrance fee is R100 per adult, R50 per child under 1.2m and pensioners. There are braaing facilities available.

Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve  Kromdraai

After an afternoon of game watching, sit back and relax with a picnic and braai at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. There are 30 shaded braai areas, a kids play area to keep them entertained and a swimming pool for you to cool off in. Entry is R130 per adult and R90 per child.

Golden Harvest Park – Northwold, Randburg

One of the biggest public open spaces in the northern suburbs, Golden Harvest Park offers you great scenery and a big open space for you to do some walking, fishing, exploring, bird watching and mountain biking. There is a play area that will keep the kids entertained, and most importantly, in the name of National Braai Day, there are braai facilities available!

Why not celebrate Heritage day with an ideal family outing with close viewings of majestic lions, cheetah walks or cub cuddling?
