For all budding local songwriters, who have yet had the opportunity for their raw talent to be discovered; the wait is over! A new songwriting competition has just been launched – nationwide – through Cape Town-based “Vivacious Voice”, with prizes worth over R30 000 to be won. Closing date for entries is Friday, 17th of August 2007.
The Vivacious Voice “Make yourself heard!” Songwriting Competition is the brainchild of singer, songwriter and music business entrepreneur Philip de Villiers. He formed South Africa’s first Songwriting Academy in the Western Cape 3 months ago with “The Songwriter’s Toolkit” course, which empowers songwriters creatively and financially.
“The struggling artist is a myth,” Philip says. “All my friends in the IT industry own luxury cars, and so can songwriters. Local songwriters could be earning dollars and pounds, but only if they can write material of an international standard. We’re part of a R2.5 billion music market locally, and a $55 billion market internationally. Before we can export our goods to be recorded by major international stars, we must be equipped with specific knowledge and skills.”
In conjunction with the competition, Philip will be launching a new 12-week correspondence course version of “The Songwriters Toolkit” to accommodate aspirant songwriters on a national scale who wish to receive the benefit of this course.
The “Make Yourself Heard!” Songwriting Competition welcomes entries from all musical genres – from Afrikaans to Alternative, Cabaret to Country, Pop Rock to R&B to Heavy Metal – and all other genres in between. The judging will not be genre-specific, but will be done on the quality of lyrics and melody, and commercial viability. The renowned judges come from different cultural and musical backgrounds, ensuring balanced, objective adjudication.
Two divisions of the competition will be run simultaneously – one for all Cape Town entries (with Philip and Vivacious Voice being based there) and one division for nationwide entries.
