Follow in the footsteps of the World Cup Vuvuzelas and the historic Blue Bulls match with a gourmet tour that’ll add flavour to the jingle of township life.
What many don’t know is that Soweto is not all history and struggle (and more recently sport!) It is also home to a multitude of great restaurants, clubs, bring-and-braais and B&Bs that are dotted around the sprawling township.
And one of those wonderful restaurants, Jazz Maniacs, at the 4-star Soweto Hotel on the Walter Sisulu square of Dedication in historic Kliptown will be our destination on Saturday 23rd October 2010 as we join festivities of the annual Soweto Mushroom Festival and experience the warmth, hospitality and flavour of Soweto.
Our host at Jazz Maniacs will be Ms Lindiwe Sangwe-Siddo, general manager of The Soweto Hotel, who is a great Festival and fungi fan, “We are once again thrilled to host some of the Soweto Mushroom Festival events here at the hotel because we enjoy being part of community activities and we are looking forward to welcoming the Joburg readers. Our chef has created a very special mushroom-inspired menu which both showcases mushrooms and kasi flavour and we know that it will be an exciting culinary adventure for everyone.” Menu items include Avocado and Oyster mushroom salad and Ostrich Mushroom Kebabs.
Cape Legend Wines are our generous wine sponsor and they will also be providing some exciting hampers in a lucky draw.
Additionally, every reader will also receive a generous goodie bag.
After the lunch the Joburg.co.za guests will be taken to Nanga Vutshilo – Positive Living Centre to be welcomed by its remarkable director Sibongile Mazibuko Mkhwanazi and the children she cares for. A short programme by the children will be followed by a tour of the facilities.
All readers are invited to bring with them a book that can be donated to the library and a tin of food for the pantry.
The cost for the lunch, including transport from the Joburg.co.za offices in Houghton, is R250 per person, which includes return transport to all venues, lunch, two glasses of wine and two soft drinks.
There are 40 seats available on the tour. Booking is essential and will not be confirmed until payment is received. Please email Julliet at email@example.com to book your place; payment must be received within 24 hours to secure your booking.

More about the Soweto Mushroom Festival
The Soweto Mushroom Festival (SMF), an initiative of the South African Farmers’ Association in association with the Soweto Tourism Association, celebrates the taste and versatility of mushrooms. Over the past 5 years Sowetans have enjoyed the flavour and fun of this foodie festival by visiting some of Soweto’s hottest participating restaurants, pubs and clubs where they can indulge in a host of wonderful mushroom dishes – specially prepared by the chefs for this wonderful gourmet event. Now Joburg readers can share in this fabulous event, and experience both the gourmet side of Soweto as well as its caring community initiatives.
