Where does one go for a good steak? That was the question that has perplexed the Joburg team for the past few weeks. Rather than sit around and theorise we decided to take action and send the team out to find Joburg’s best steak. The mouth-watering results can be seen below.
Byron’s best – Meat Company
Melrose Arch, Montecasino or Clearwater Mall. (I’ve only tried the Monte branch).
I love steak and rarely have one I don’t like, but then I don’t often find myself at a restaurant that can screw a steak up. You can grill or fry a good steak at home and as I said it’s hard to fluff, so that’s what I based my decision on – which steak makes me leave home?
I chose Meat Company’s fillet with black pepper crust and personally I like it medium or medium rare with a glass of red on a cold day and a Heineken on a hot one. Their trademark black pepper crust is definitely the hook which brings me back every time.
Average price for a main course: steaks start at about R90
Recommend: Fillet with black pepper crust
Philippa’s find – Thundergun Steak House
Shop 5, Palala Centre
Cnr Beyers Naude and Lewisham Rd Blackheath
Thundergun Steak House in Northcliff has been in operation for over 40 years, having opened their doors in 1968. I remember having dinner there as a child, which was a huge treat in those days, and I am happy to report that my experience as an adult is the same, if not better. Renowned for their steaks, ribs and carvery, the team at Thunder Gun are focused on quality for great value, and deliver with quick and efficient service – the total customer service experience. They have great specials on their carvery, and also offer Tuesday lunch for pensioners, as well as other weekly specials.
Ambience: old world steak house; family friendly with kiddies room; also features a nice pub
Average price for a main course: ranges from R80 – R130.
Recommend: Rump or sirloin steak; burgers are also very good; Lime milkshakes are great!

Shaun’s shoo-in – The Grill Shop
Rock Cottage Shopping Centre
Cnr Christian de Wet and John Vorster Roads
I like my steak like an intelligent comment from Julius Malema – very rare. So rare in fact that a skilled surgeon should be able to bring it back to life. I also like it when a restaurant offers more than the standard cheese/barbeque/monkey gland sauce option. Most poncey restaurant reviewers will wax lyrical about décor, ambience, food presentation and write nonsense about subtle aromas and flavours. Rubbish! People want a good, hot meal, cold beer, efficient service and prices that don’t leave you bankrupt. The Grill shop offers all of this and more. My favourite starters include the chicken livers (I must apologise to management for spilling the sauce over the white table cloths) or mussels while I usually opt for a steak, Espetada or chicken cordon bleu as my main meal.
Average price for a main course: From R60
Recommend: Anything on the menu is good. Even the most pretentious of restaurant reviewers will be blown away.

Chantelle’s choice – Carnivore’s
Misty Hills Country Hotel
69 Drift Boulevard
Meat, meat, meat, beautiful, juicy, succulent, naturally flavoured, matured meat. Now that I have my mouth watering and hopefully yours too, if you are a meat lover Carnivore Restaurant in Muldersdrif should be at the top of your places-to-visit list. With an open crackling fire and the smell of beautifully grilled meat, the choices are massive from beef and lamb to a choice of five game meats. Each table is given a little red flag and when your stomach can’t take it anymore you lower your flag and admit defeat. This was one of my greatest eating experiences. They have a lovely wine collection but also offer their own special drink called Kenyan Dawa. I would suggest a taxi to drive you if you decide on this route! They offer a friendly, lively ambience, somewhere for long lost friends and family to catch up.
Average price for a main course:R 120 to R 250
Recommend: If you enjoy meat, you will enjoy just about everything on the menu
