Become A Regular At The Usual On Grant

Norwood is getting back to its bustling old self … finally! As more and more places start to pop up on Grant Avenue, more life gets injected into the area. Welcome, The Usual … a new place to get your food fix!

There is an area of Jozi that is full of history and, once upon a time, was the go-to place in Johannesburg. This place is Norwood and, in case you haven’t heard, it’s finally getting back to its old ways!

New and original restaurants are already popping up all over Grant Avenue – a place that used to be the equivalent of Cape Town’s Long Street or Melville’s 7th Avenue … we’re not talking franchise restaurants here, we’re talking one-of-a-kind unique experiences. The latest edition to this street is The Usual on Grant – a new place to get your foodie fix.

I have lived in this area for a long time so eating at this restaurant felt very special. Firstly, every item on the menu is named after a surrounding street … even the street I live on is on the menu! Sure, that’s really cool, but would the food stand up to the honour of my street name?

The answer, very simply, is a big, fat yes. I had a humble hamburger but the freshly-made patties were just like the ones my grandmother used to make – full of flavour. One thing that goes hand-in-hand with hamburgers is milkshakes … so, of course, I ordered one … and I’m  just going to put this out there – I believe The Usual on Grant makes the best chocolate milkshake in Jozi. Yeah, I said it. Don’t believe me? Go and try it for yourself!

In fact, my meal was so good that I’ve already planned what I’ll be eating on my next two visits. I know you want to know so I’ll share: I’ll be trying their breakfast out and, after that, definitely something from their pasta selection!

If you’re looking for a place with a great vibe and food to match, then The Usual on Grant will not disappoint. It’s perfect for a breakfast or lunch with friends … especially if you’re from the area or simply have a memory of Grant Avenue back in the day – just reading the menu will take you back in time and make you feel nostalgic!
