Not far from Johannesburg is a 47 000 hectare region known as the Cradle of Humankind, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, because of the richness of fossil finds. Not far from the world famous Sterkfontein Caves, that have yielded the famous fossil of Mrs Ples, lies Maropeng the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The exhibition brings the story of this World Heritage Site and much more to life in an interactive, educational and entertaining way.
An educational journey of discovery
The underground exhibition offers an educational journey of discovery covering a wide range of curriculum related learning areas for each of the four educational phases. The exhibition is divided into sections including an area dedicated to a geological time prior to humans, our path to humanity, the 9 characteristics that make us human, science zones, a sustainability wall and a section which is dedicated to displaying original fossils.
Educational resource pack
Maropeng offers a curriculum linked educational resource pack for each of the four educational phases including worksheets and assessment rubrics. This useful tool will assist both teachers and learners in ensuring the excursion is educationally beneficial but at the same time interactive and fun.
Accommodation for learners
For those schools further away, Maropeng offers accommodation consisting of four dormitories each sleeping 30 learners. The cost per day includes dinner, bed and breakfast and excludes the tour of Maropeng visitor centre and Sterkfontein Caves. Additional educational and fun activities can be organised for learners such as star-gazing, a game drive and other outdoor activities.
Annually thousands of school children enjoy a history lesson with a difference when they visit the Sterkfontein Caves, including the hominid exhibition. It is a highly educational experience especially memorable for school children as they tend to learn more by being educated in a fun environment and is a great add on excursion to Maropeng.
