The Business Of Cake Baking With Absolutely Decadent

We meet up with Rosa of Absolutely Decadent to chat about the perfect recipe to turn sweet treats into a full time business.

What was the first thing you ever baked and what did you learn from that experience?

The first official birthday cake I ever created was a birthday cake for my youngest daughter and was made with flood icing and covered in fondant.  It was a clown cake with the clown holding the balloons.  I had attended a cake decorating course at the local college in Kempton Park where we lived at the time and flood icing was one of the lessons we were taught.  What I learnt from that experience was that I truly loved cake decorating and decided there and then to pursue it and from there I started to make decorated cakes for family and friends and all special occasions deserved special cakes.

Do you find that baking (and cooking for that matter) is a form of therapy? As if it relaxes you.

Baking is definitely very relaxing and just the aroma of a cake being baked in the oven wafting through the kitchen is amazing.  Baking in winter is such a treat as I get to make tons of biscuits and biscotti for orders and for my family and the house is all cosy and warm.  Working with fondant is very therapeutic when I make cake toppers as I am transported into the fun and quirky world of children’s cartoon characters. Christmas time is a very busy time for us and creating all the Christmas fondant characters is so much fun and the whole house is festive and cheery so yes it definitely is relaxing and fun.

What’s your favourite item to bake?

My favourite item to bake is children’s cakes because of all the cute characters that come to life through fondant modelling.  I also love cupcakes because of all the creativity I can express in decorating them.

What’s the biggest no-no when it comes to ordering a cake for a kiddie’s birthday party?

I would advise not to order red or blue velvet cakes for kids.

How long has Absolutely Decadent been going for?

We have been going 14 years.  But I have been baking from the age of 19.

What sets Absolutely Decadent apart from other bakers and caterers?

We (my daughter and I work together) are a small home based business and as such we take exceptional pride in our work and everything we make is made from scratch with lots of love and careful attention to detail.  It is our policy to never turn down a customer even when time constraints are tight we accommodate each customer.  We use only the best products and freshest ingredients for all of our cakes and platters.   Every Christmas we make a big Christmas cake which is decorated in fondant with fondant characters and the cake is then donated to a local charity.  This year we have decided to take St. Mary’s Children’s Home in Rosettenville and make them our chosen charity.

How big a roll does creativity play in your line of work?

Creativity plays a big role in the cake business especially in the area of children’s birthday cakes as everything is made and modeled by hand in fondant.  Customers will approach me with an idea and colour scheme and theme and we work on ideas and character toppers to suit their requirements.
