Comedy in the City

There’s nothing more uplifting than a healthy dose of laughter! And to tickle that funny bone, here is a list of side-splitting shows that’ll be taking centre stage from August to December 2018! 


A Couch & A Piano

Date: 14 – 26 August 2018

Venue: Auto and General Theatre on the Square, Nelson Mandela Square, corner Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road, Sandton, Johannesburg

Putting a hilarious spin on the miserable topic of divorce, this is a comedic musical that you don’t want to miss. A Couch & A Piano follows Jo, a recent divorcee, who arrives for her very first session with Cape Town’s top psychologist, Carl Zimmerman. As well as the expected couch in the corner of the consulting room, there’s a Steinway baby-grand piano and a couple of guitars, and other than the expected talking through your emotions and issues, Dr Zimmerman uses music therapy. This comedy stars Cat Simoni and Alan Glass and is directed by Paul Spence.

The much-loved comedy about a dysfunctional Portuguese immigrant family with more dirty secrets between them than the mafia returns to the stage. This one-woman-six-character show played by the award-winning Sonia Esgueira has been one of the longest-running one-man shows in the country. Recreated into a brand-new story with never-before-seen material, it promises side-splitting laughter and hilarity for all. It’s a funny, heart-warming and insightful look at how minority cultures battle to preserve their identity in an ever-changing world.

A Night To Remember Comedy Show

If you’re in need of a big dose of laughter, don’t miss out on A Night To Remember Comedy Show. Join Montecasino as they celebrate Nelson Mandela’s centenary and legacy with some of South Africa’s iconic comedians, including side-splitting performances by Barry Hilton, Chris Forrest, David Kau, Marc Lottering, Nik Rabinowitz, Riaad Moosa and Tumi Morake. All monies raised will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Defending the Caveman is back by popular demand… again! Without a doubt one of the longest-running and most successful solo comedy shows in South Africa (and Broadway for that matter) is heading to Parker’s. Updated and relative to today’s world of tweets, selfies and six million Facebook friends, this production is still as hilarious, affectionate and insightful as ever before in explaining why men and women see the world so differently.

Deep Fried Man – In Good Taste 2.0

Deep Fried Man is back with a bunch of new material for his fifth solo show, In Good Taste 2.0. The original version was a huge success when it hit the stage at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City. Now, he’s out to prove that sometimes the sequel is far better than the original with an intimate one-man show complete with hilarious songs and magnificent musical improv that will have everyone joining in on the fun and singing along. The Goliath Comedy Road Trip

Date: 28 September 2018 and 22 December 2018

Venue: Mardi Gras Theatre, Carnival City, corner Century Road and Elsburg Road, Brakpan, Boksburg, Johannesburg.

GOLIATH and GOLIATH has steadily built one of the most successful comic brands in the country, and this September the troupe, in partnership with Sun International, will be going on an exciting and hysterically funny road trip, visiting Wild Coast Sun, Sibaya, Carousel, Boardwalk, Meropa, Time Square and Carnival City as part of The Goliath Comedy Road Trip. Catch them in Gauteng on 28 September (Carnival City in Boksburg) and 22 December (Time Square in Pretoria). Here’s where you can get your tickets.

Chris Tucker LIVE

Date: 10 November 2018

Venue: Ticketpro Dome, Northumberland Road and Olievenhout Avenue, North Riding, Johannesburg.

You all read correctly! Chris Tucker, best known for playing the role of Detective James Carter in the well-known comedy, Rush Hour, will be heading to South Africa, bringing his comedy tour along with him. He will be bringing the funny to three cities: Cape Town at Grand Arena, Grand West; Durban at the Durban ICC and Johannesburg at the Ticketpro Dome.

Parker’s Comedy & Jive

This spot always has a line-up of awesome stand-up comedy if you’re looking for a night out on the town or simply need a little laughter to lighten your mood. Expect to see local comics such as Martin Davis, Mum-z, Panch Gasela, Glen Biderman-Pam, Tim Plewman, Tony King, Nicholas Goliath, Suhayl Essa, KG and more. Goliath Comedy Club

Every Friday and Saturday the Goliath Comedy Club at Melrose Arch offers visitors an evening chockablock full of good jokes and loads of laughter.
