Gourmet Burgers Galore At Dukes Burgers

Looking for some of the biggest, juiciest burgers along with the most decadent milkshakes in Jozi? Then best you head over to Dukes Burgers as soonest… this quirky spot is an oldie but a goodie! P.S: Be sure to arrive hungry.

We may no longer be in the era of comfort food joints and gastropubs, but Joburg restaurateurs still excel at putting out burgers. Some of these are classic, or draped with cheese. Others are dressed up with eggs or cranberry jam. All of them scratch at an itch that most of us get, and Dukes Burgers in Greenside is home to every kind that you can think of.

I arrived at Dukes Burgers last Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend, Nik. It was a rainy afternoon, so we took a seat at a table inside. Situated on the busy strip of Greenside among all the bars and other eateries, you can bet that Dukes is a vibrant spot that offers a trendy yet comfortable ambiance.

What I really admired the minute I stepped inside was the wonderfully loud purple décor. Out back is a lovely courtyard decorated with rustic pieces. I can imagine this being a great spot to enjoy your meal on a balmy summer’s evening. It’s a pity it was raining when I visited, as I much prefer dining outside than in, but there’s always a next time.

The menu at Dukes comprises a vast variety of beef, chicken, lamb ostrich and veggie burgers, and they also have salads on offer for those who are on a strict diet or for those who just don’t feel like having a burger. They also offer a great variety of milkshakes and cocktails.

My boyfriend and I were so hungry when we arrived that we flipped through their rather long menu quite quickly, and got right to ordering up our burgers before even ordering drinks. I decided on the My Cousin Vinnie burger (a chicken fillet layered in Parma ham on a bed of greens, topped with Camembert cheese and cranberry jelly with a cucumber ribbon), while he went for the Waygu (200g Waygu beef on a bed of lettuce, fresh tomato, emmentaler cheese and caramelised onion with a cucumber ribbon).

The food came out quickly, and was downright delicious. The burgers were huge, and the patties perfectly juicy. The sweet potato wedges that we both had on the side were also great. I don’t generally like sweet potato, but I really enjoyed them. Overall, the meal was very much filling and satisfying.

To end off our meal, we then decided to share one of their milkshakes. We decided to go with the Oreo one, and it was fantastic – rich and creamy with just the right amount of biscuity crunch. It was the perfect sweet ending to our delicious burger meal.

Overall, I had a great time at Dukes. The burgers were amazing. I’ll even go as far as to say that they’re one of the best burger joints in Joburg. Furthermore, the service was knowledgeable and friendly, and I loved the atmosphere. I’ll be back!

P.S.: Dukes Burgers now offers a private upstairs section that’s perfect for your next dinner party or bachelorette! Contact the restaurant directly for further information as well as fee structures.
