We may not have the ocean or a massive mountain dominating our view – but at LONG LAST, Joburg can say that we have our own winery!
Yes, Gerakaris Family Wines has opened on Marlborough Avenue in Craighall Park and we couldn’t be happier!
As with many new startups (and music bands), Gerakaris Family Wines began in a garage. Owner Kath Gerakaris, who has a postgraduate diploma in viticulture and winemaking, had been making wine in her garage in Joburg for a few years before she found the perfect home for her new venture – on the REEA foundation property, alongside the beautiful Colourful Splendour Nursery and Delta Café.
The venue is ideal for those looking to pop in and give their wines a try. Booking is essential for more than two people, so keep that in mind when planning a visit. At this point, only tapas are available – a small bowl of olives and a small cheese platter – those looking for a more substantial meal can pop next door to Delta Café. You are, however, more than welcome to linger over your wine tasting and enjoy the farm vibe!
In terms of cost per tasting, you can expect to pay R30 to taste each of the four wines on offer. Any wine that you decide to purchase can be bought immediately:
- Ellaki (un-wooded Chenin blanc) – R120/bottle
- Elli (wooded Chenin blanc) – R220
- Tom (Syrah) – R180
- Thomas (Syrah) – R280
The wooded Elli is a wonderful “textured wine” that marries beautifully with food, while the Ellaki is lighter and easier to drink on its own as an apéritif. The Tom is a fruit-driven Syrah (Shiraz), while the Thomas is more serious, more complex and aromatic.
The wine is priced at between R120 and R280 per bottle (in April 2018).
- Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 12:00 – 17:00
- Saturday: 10:00 – 15:00
- Sunday: 11:00 – 14:00
The winery and gardens can also be hired as a function venue for corporate events, launches, birthday parties and family gatherings. Simply bring in your own caterer and any specific décor items and you have an exciting new venue at your disposal!
This really is a wonderful spot for wine lovers, those looking for something a little different to try, and even for kids who can play and have pony rides around the beautiful venue.
Personally, we hope this winery will go from strength to strength in years to come. Sipping wine and eating authentic Bobotie in front of the fireplace in winter would be first prize for us!
