Gold Reef City Theme Park will be hosting Jozi Fest – a joyous celebration of Jozi’s unique cultural heritage – from Wednesday, 24th of September to Sunday, 5th of October 2008. This festival will bring together history, fashion, music, and much more, in a colourful salute to Jozi’s rich cultural diversity.

Highlights of the celebration include musical performances by the likes of Siphokazi and the Soweto String Quartet, a Flower Fare featuring Lynton Johnson and his students, and a fashion show boasting some of the country’s top up-and-coming designers.

Jozi Fest is a celebration during which the people of the city can appreciate and enjoy each other’s diverse cultures and enjoy the very best entertainment that Jozi has to offer. Gold Reef City Theme Park, which is built around an authentic 19th century mine, is a custodian of Jozi’s history and culture, so it is an appropriate host for this festival.

The line-up for the celebration kicks off with a performance by Afro-soul artist, Siphokazi in the Town Square from 15h00 till 16h00 on Heritage Day (Wednesday, 24th of September). Siphokazi Maraqana, who hails from Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, took South Africa’s music industry by storm with the 2006 release of her debut album ubuntu bam, which was awarded with a 2007 SAMA award for best African adult contemporary album. While Siphokazi is performing, the crowd will be able to revel in a fashion show at the Town Square showcasing the work of upcoming designers Khethiwe Gumede, Sive Mbilase, Kabelo Moepe, and Tshepo Skosana.

Kaya FM will be doing a special live Heritage Day broadcast on Wednesday, 24th of September from the Gold Reef City Theme Park Town Square.

A Flower Fare will run from Wednesday, 24th of September to Sunday, 5th October. Tshwane University of Technology students under the guidance of lecturer Lynton Johnson are putting together an impressive floral display of the South African flag to celebrate the country’s heritage.

The Soweto String Quartet, one of the country’s most-loved musical acts will also be performing at the Town Square on Saturday, 27th of September. The Soweto String Quartet, is a world-renowned classical South African band, famous for their unique blend of traditional rhythms, township jazz, pop songs, jazz-fusion and strong classical music.

The vibrant, young Wits Choir takes the stage on Sunday, 28th of September, from 12h00 till 13h00 at the Town Square. With members from as far a field as Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the USA, this choir’s live performances are a superb blend of melody, harmony, lyrics, gesture and dance that is a memorable experience for both audience and chorister.

Other entertainment offerings include:
• Abajabulisi (The Black Shield Singers) who will perform on Friday, 3rd of October, from 12h00 till 13h00 at the Town Square.
• The Sweet Voice Master Choir will appear on Saturday, 4th of October, from 12h00 till 13h00 at the Town Square. The Sweet Voice Masters is a group of seven talented young singers who have made a major impact in both the corporate and commercial markets over the past four years. They have performed with Celine Dion amongst others.
• Soweto Marimba Kids who recently returned from their tour in Canada, are known for giving a “Taste of African Musical Entertainment”. These young entertainers will be performing on Sunday, 5th of October from 12h00 till 13h00 at the Town Square.

Gold Reef City Theme Park is also proud to present its new mascots in time for the Jozi Fest. The new mascots are headlined by Nugget, a friendly fellow who represents the mining theme of the park, and Jo Z, hip representative of contemporary Jozi with a hint of bling.

The remaining team of characters includes Patty Parrot, Harvey Rabbit, Chase, Elephant, and Clara Cluck. These characters feature in the Theme Park’s street parades and are happy to pose for photos to give you memories of your day at Gold Reef City Theme Park.

Admission to all of the Jozi Fest entertainment offerings is included in the standard entry fee to Gold Reef City Theme Park. Entrance during school holidays and weekends is R110 per person, including all rides, shows and exhibitions, but excluding ‘Jozi’s Story of Gold’. Entrance for all attractions and ‘Jozi’s Story of Gold’ is R170 per person.
