March Madness – Running Events In The City

2018 is in full swing which means we should all be on top of our New Year resolutions. But if not, it’s alright. Some things take a little longer to get the hang of… like running a full 5km without passing out because we just cannot catch our breath. And let’s not forget that painful side stitch! But keep training, you’ll get there. All it takes is a little practice and what better way to do so than by partaking in a few running events in the city. Here are a few for the month of March. Good luck!

Rietvlei ParkRun

Don’t feel like being too competitive? That okay, begin with a leisurely run at the Rietvlei ParkRun every Saturday from 08:00. And it’s free! To register, head to to get your unique barcode. We’ve also heard the Rietvlei Zoo Farm will also be hosting an Easter Festival Doggy Walk (5km & 2km) on Saturday, 31 March 2018. Dogs on a leash are welcome, so take your four-legged companion with you!

Special Zoo Trot

Join the Johannesburg Zoo for a 5km walk and/run through the Zoo to celebrate 114 years of world-class conservation management. Finishers of the trot will receive a special edition medal.

Thaba Nights – Trail Run

Thaba Nights is a Night Trail Run along the stunning Thaba Trails just next to the magnificent Thaba Eco Hotel and Spa – Mulbarton. Runners can choose between a 5km or 10km route and enjoy a challenging yet enjoyable run through the surrounding nature reserve. Keep your eyes out for the local wildlife such as Jackal, Porcupine, Zebra, Springbok, Wildebeest and much more. Stick around after the event for some giveaways, drinks and food.

Zwartkop Nite Race #4

You need experience a night run at least once, which is why we urge you to register and enter the Zwartkop Nite Race. This event is loads of fun! Finishers can choose between a medal or craft beer after they have completed the race, enjoy live entertainment, indulge in the best pizzas in town and even stand the chance of winning great lucky draw prizes on the night. You’ll also earn Vitality Point for this trail run.

St Paddy’s Day Bush Pub Run

Who says you can’t drink and run at the same time? At this event, you certainly can! The Saint Paddy’s Day Bush Pub Run is an incredible annual event where avid runners (and beer lovers) participate in a 7km night trail run with four themed pubs on route. There will be awesome prizes for best dressed up for grabs, great music, good food and drinks available on the night. There’s no better way to celebrate this great Irish tradition than at this event! Headlamp or torch is compulsory.

The Hollard Daredevil Run 2018

Gents, grab your Speedos and join the fight against cancer! It takes proper… *clears throat*… ‘guts’ to run through peak-hour traffic wearing nothing but a purple Speedo. But that’s nothing compared to surviving cancer, a disease that doesn’t recognise age, colour or body shape. To raise awareness of male cancers, men of all ages are challenged to slip into a purple Speedo and take to the streets for the eighth annual Hollard Daredevil Run, to help run cancer outta town! All proceeds from the run will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation to help fund cancer awareness programmes and testing across South Africa. Join the 5K run with a difference, that makes a difference.

Toyota #Warrior3

The third Warrior of the 2018 series will be taking place at Tierpoot Adventure Farm. This exciting two-day event will be hosting all three of the traditional races: 15km Black Ops with 35 obstacles, 10km Commando with 22 obstacles, 5km Rookie with 15 obstacles and also two days of Reebok sprint races.

K-Way Gallopers 15km Road Race

If you enjoy road running, then make sure you register for the K-Way Gallopers. This is the perfect race if you’re looking to test your limits and see how far you’ve come in your training. Register online at ChampionChip website (online entry end date is 12 March 2018) or do your entry manually at Sweat Shop – Dunkeld (011 325 2567) and Sweat Shop – Bedfordview (011 450 2421). Entries are also available at most CGA races (look for Gallopers Gazebo).

Kings Kloof Paradise Trail

It’s the race everybody’s been waiting for! Kings Kloof Paradise Trail is here featuring beautiful valleys, river crossings, natural water pools, mountain terrain, spectacular views, rocky technical tracks, endurance testing uphills and much more. It’s home to a variety of fauna and flora and forms part of the Crocodile Ramble, a tourist route that runs along the Crocodile River. Enter here.

Our surroundings look totally different by night and it’s something you need to experience at least once in your running adventures. Merrell Autumn Night Run

Don’t forget to enter this midweek evening fun in the park. Take a friend along with you, as well as your headlamp and enjoy night time fun, post-race drinks and dinner at Delta Cafe for prizegiving with lots of lucky draws. Make sure you dress up as BRIGHT and LUMO as you can. GLOW in the dark, wear NEON, anything… just be sure to dazzle! There will be well marked and marshalled routes into the park starting and finishing at Delta Cafe.

36th Randburg Harriers Easter 100

If you’re a long distance runner looking to put your training and endurance to the test, then make sure you register and enter the 36th Randburg Harriers Easter 100. This running event takes place over three days from the 30 March 2018 to the 1 April 2018 (AKA Easter Weekend), from the Randburg Sports Complex. The event schedule is as follows: Day 1 – 48km, Day 2 – 32km, Day 3 – 20km. That’s a total of 100km in three days (hence the name of the event). Pre-entries will be accepted at Randburg Harriers Clubhouse between 17:30 and 19:00 on the following Thursdays: 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th March 2018. And if you miss those dates, entries on run days will open at 04:30.

Dates: Friday, 30 March 2018 – Sunday, 01 April 2018.

Venue: Randburg Sports Complex, corner Republic Road and Silver Pine Avenue, Randburg.
