Where Was It?
The Johannesburg Zoo in Parkview.
About The Event
All Cancer Warriors, their families and friends were invited to join the Breast Health Foundation for a 5km One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo. One Step at a Time is an initiative of the Breast Health Foundation, symbolic of personal triumph and victory from diagnosis, treatment to survivorship. This event is a symbolic message of defiance to go out to all people fighting cancer and stand as an example of what is possible. Exercise plays a very important role in long-term health and walking is an ideal form of exercise that can be enjoyed by the survivors, their families and supporters. All proceeds went towards the Breast Health Foundation in aid to raise awareness, educate the public about breast cancer and breast health and empower women.
Attending this event as my February #NoRegrets2018 meant the world to me. It has taken me a quite a while to show my emotions out about my mother’s diagnosis. I decided to face my fear and take it head on by participating in this amazing event in aid of a worthy cause. The thought of losing my mom because of cancer is nothing short of absolutely heartbreaking and a very difficult realisation to come to terms with.
I got my whole family and lots of my friends to join the walk to support my mum in this battle, showing her that she is not alone and has an amazing support structure that will help and comfort her through this difficult time. A 5 km walk through the zoo is a brilliant concept, as it makes it more social and interesting. We got to meet other families and cancer warriors going through the same thing as we are. The atmosphere was loving, caring, heart-warming and lively. Everybody doing the walk had a smile on their face and the number of people that attended the event was amazing! T-shirts, tutus, caps and banners all showing the support for their loved ones was definitely a lovely and emotional scene. It was such a pleasant walk and thank goodness the weather was perfect.
I will definitely do more of these walks. It encourages us to fight as hard as we can and helps us realise that people are never alone in this world. We can conquer everything that comes our way, it doesn’t matter how difficult, long or short that path may be – it can be conquered together.
