“Every child is an artist; the problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Pablo Picasso

Despite living quite close to Hyde Park, I never knew that the Smudge Contemporary Art Centre existed in Craighall Park until a friend chose to host her little girl’s birthday party at the venue. Conveniently located in the Valley Shopping Centre on Jan Smuts Avenue in Craighall Park, this absolute gem is rapidly becoming a favourite for both moms and children.

In a nutshell:

Smudge aims to offer children a space where they can both develop and express their creativity – whether it is through drawing , doing crafts, dressing up, making music and so much more. I love the fact that the children have a place where they can quite literally draw on the walls or the tables, and can rearrange the interior of the rooms to suit their liking.

The facilities include a big centrally located art room, as well as an interactive music room, children’s book lounge, fantasy dress-up area (costumes that you can rent for parties), party room, and the all-important coffee shop.

More detail:

I would suggest subscribing to the Smudge online newsletter (visit their website for details) so that you can receive regular updates on the various activities and specially themed classes that they have available each week. For example, during the next few weeks, your children can make a giraffe photo frame, foam door hangers, felt hand bags, pencil cases and canvas paintings! Beading, painting and drawing are on-going activities and can be enjoyed daily.

The crafts area is not exclusively for girls and contains include wooden airplanes to build and paint, sand-art bracelets, slithery wooden snakes, expression stamps, as well as wooden, textured dough rollers. There is something for every child, which makes this venue a real hit for children not wanting to merely climb up a jungle gym all afternoon!

Smudge offers Toddlers-in-Tune music workshops every Friday from 10h15 – 10h45. These workshops are for babies under 2 years old and are run by a qualified music teacher.

You can also pop into Smudge for any arts and crafts supplies including paint, ribbons, stickers, craft-kits, rhinestones etc. They have a range of scrapbooking supplies as well as wonderfully creative kits for your children or gifts. The team will make up gift bags for birthdays or special occasions and also provide party-pack kits for your at- home craft party.

Smudge’s party room is a private room where your child can choose the theme and activities. An art teacher will guide the little artists through the activity such as hand puppets, door hangers, t-shirt painting, jewellery boxes, pencil cases, beaded worms and many others. The pricing varies per activity.
