This one’s an oldie but a goodie … you might have heard that Kauai has recently undergone a revamp – yes, the franchise has shaken off its island theme and gone for a much sleeker look, with a menu to match! They’ve hopped on the superfood bandwagon, too, so expect to see items like chia seeds on their smoothie menu. You can even have vitamin C-enriched smoothies if you’re feeling a bit under the weather. Our favourite smoothie here would have to be a toss up between the Chia Charge, which is made from banana, dates, chia seeds, cinnamon, fat-free milk and low-fat frozen yoghurt and, for an extra kick, the Cappuccino Blast, which is made from espresso, chocolate, low-fat milk and low-fat frozen yoghurt.

Leafy Greens Café

Situated in the stunning Muldersdrift area, Leafy Greens Café is the perfect place to perch yourself under the sun and sip on a tasty and refreshing smoothie. We love the Almond Butter Smoothie, which is made from raw, stone-ground almond butter, vegan protein powder, bananas, dates, maca, mesquite and lemon. It’s as good as it sounds – and the health benefits are endless! If you need to add a little something extra to your drink, there are plenty of superfood boosters to pick from, like baobab, which contains calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and fibre. Or why not add some lucuma? It’s an anti-oxidant fruit that contains vitamin B and is an immune booster too.

Where: Rocky Ridge Road, Off Beyers Naude Drive, Muldersdrift.

Fruits And Roots

How about a meal in a glass? If you’re on the go, a smoothie from Fruits and Roots could be just what you need to keep your energy levels up … their Raw Jungle Protein Smoothie is just the thing! Made with banana, pineapple, coconut milk and spirulina, what more could you ask for? If you’re keen on something that’ll give you that extra burst of energy, then the Pick Me Up is perfect – it’s made from fruits and berries, cashews and soya milk powder or frozen yoghurt … sounds good to us!

Where: Hobart Corner Shopping Centre, corner Hobart and Grosvenor Roads Bryanston.

Uncle Merv’s

Located in the oh-so-trendy Maboneng Precint, this street-side stall makes a mean smoothie. The winning smoothie at this place (according to us, of course) just so happens to be the one with the coolest name … it’s called the Felix King. It’s super-filling and tastes like dessert … made from peanut butter, soya milk, banana, honey and dates, you can’t go wrong with this one. Grab a take away and sip on it while you walk around Maboneng – hello, energy for days!

Where: Corner Fox Street and Kruger Streets, Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg.

Wolves Café

Take your laptop along with you and turn Wolves Café into your office for the day … power through your workload (or social media session – we’re not judging) with a smoothie and you’ll be good to go! The Berry Nice is a pretty good way to get your daily fruit fix in, with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and orange juice – delish!

Where: Shop 4, Corlett Drive, Illovo, Johannesburg.

Aurelie’s Café

This healthy restaurant will certainly sort you out in the smoothie department! Pick a smoothie base and add in any of their extras to make your drink extra healthy. We vote for the Soul Mate base, which is made from strawberries, non-dairy frozen yoghurt and strawberry juice. To that, we’d suggest adding some macadamia nut butter, baby spinach (you won’t even taste it, we swear!) and some whey protein powder. Now doesn’t that sound delicious?

Where: Waterfall Estate, Country Estate Drive, Off Maxwell Drive, Kyalami, Johannesburg..

The Local Kitchen Co.

This home-style eatery is a great place to pick up a smoothie. Whether you want to sit down and enjoy it or grab it as an in-between meal snack, The Local Kitchen Co has the answer. Their Get Up And Go smoothie is made from oat bran, mango, low-fat yoghurt and honey and will work well for breakfast, too. Or how about their classic combo of Peanut Butter and Banana, made with low-fat yoghurt, peanut butter, banana and honey? Yum!

Where: 11, The Posthouse Link, Corner Posthouse and Main Road, Bryanston, Johannesburg.
