Train travel is one of the best ways to explore South Africa safely and in comfort, while you take in the country’s magnificent scenery and historical sights. For overseas or South African travellers with a taste for history, a rail trip through South Africa provides a wonderful glimpse into the country’s past.

Says Cynthia Ndaba, “South Africa has a rich, cultural history that many people have never explored properly, as it often requires travelling into some of the further reaches of the country – which means spending a long time in the car! Choosing to explore South Africa by luxury rail is an excellent decision, as you get to discover the country’s historical sites and landmarks safely and in comfort, without exhausting yourself on a long road trip. In addition, no matter what the season or the weather, the beauty of being on a train is that you are protected from the elements. You don’t have to contend with slippery roads or bad drivers and can take a break whenever you feel like it! Air conditioning in summer and heating in winter means that your comfort is always assured.”

A camera mounted on the front of the train provides a driver’s eye-view of the scenery the train is passing through, shown on a giant screen in the Club Car, or on one of the TV channels for private viewing in each suite.

The second train set has a conference car, which makes it ideally suited to charters for strategic meetings, special events and occasions.

The variety of routes offered by The Blue Train ensures that there is a journey to suit every traveller’s taste. Now more affordable for South Africans than ever before, a trip on The Blue Train is the perfect opportunity to be a tourist in your own country and explore South Africa’s beautiful countryside and rich heritage.

Since its inception in 1946, the world-renowned Blue Train has been associated with luxury, the best local hospitality and tourism. Two reconstructions and refurbishments over the years have ensured that The Blue Train continues to offer travellers the ultimate train-travel experience. The Blue Train has gathered an impressive list of accolades, such as being voted the world’s leading luxury train for four consecutive years in a row, and the recent awarding of “Superior Status” by the AA Grading Council. The Blue Train is owned by South African state-owned public company, Transnet Limited, through its subsidiary, Spoornet.
