Thrills at HSH Princess Charlene Royal Race Day At Turffontein Racecourse

Head to the world renowned Royal Race Day At Turffontein Racecourse for a glamorous day at the races with HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco! It’s the most stylish day on the racing calendar, bringing thrilling races, loads of family fun and royalty to the tracks.

What Is It?

Enjoy a day at the races like royalty at this year’s Royal Race Day at the Turffontein Racecourse. It’s not everyday that the sport of kings finds a real-life, fairytale princess in the crowds, especially in Johannesburg. Her Serence Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco has confirmed her attendance, promising a magnificent day of action-packed racing. This event is held annually in her honour and hosts the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes. The day epitomises style and elegance, but more importantly (and in true racing spirit), has a large charity element attached to it.

Royal Race Day

The theme of the day has historically encouraged gentleman to wear top hats and tails, and ladies to complete their elegant outfits with a fascinator or hat. This year is no different, and the Royal Race Day promises to be the most elegant affair on the racing calendar.

As part of the festivities on the Royal Race Day, learners from Gugulesizwe Primary School and Lesabe Primary School from Benoni will be attending the race day, together with learners from a number of schools from the Turffontein area. The children will be hosted for the day and will be the main group to welcome Princess Charlene on her arrival. And to keep all the little ones entertained on the day, there will be free entertainment on offer, including a demarcated area with jumping castles and other activities, a jungle gym in the piazza area, a farrier demonstrating live hot-shoeing, and a puppet or magic show. Also, the Cinderella horse-drawn carriage and pony rides will make for lovely photo opportunities.

Royal Race Day

As far as the racing is concerned, the headline race on the day is the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Cub Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 600m with total stakes of R1-million. Two Maiden Plates, of which one is for fillies and mares only, with total stakes of R250 000 each and sponsored by Princess Charlene of Monaco, serve as supporting acts. These races carry huge prize money considering the runners are maidens, having never won a race, but it’s become customary in recognition of the Princess’s well-documented support for what is usually considered the underdog.
