Tuesday, 2nd of December – Sunday, 14th of December, 2008
Don’t miss the acclaimed musical romp The Von Memerty’s: A Celebration which is a must-see for the whole family this holiday season. After playing to sell-out houses around the country, the show comes to the University of Johannesburg from Tuesday, 2nd of December, 2008 to Sunday, 14th of December, 2008.
The Von Memerty’s: A Celebration stars one of South Africa’s best-loved entertainers Ian Von Memerty along with wife Viv, a former ballroom and Latin dance champion and their two children. Think of vaudeville shows of yesteryear or the dancing and singing Von Trapp family from A Sound of Music and you’ll get an idea of the scope of A Celebration.
The show came about because the two Von Memerty children Oscar, aged 13, and Kavia, aged eight, were watching Ian and Viv rehearse and wanted to be involved. The result has been called “inspirational, uplifting and joyous”. Launched in June 2008 the show has already played all to rave reviews and capacity audiences all over the country.
A decade ago the Von Memerty family lived in the media spotlight as they faced a double tragedy when both of their children, Valeska and Oscar, had been diagnosed with the fatal and debilitating disease Mucopolysaccharidosis type 6 or MPS 6. Valeska died in 1998, but Oscar, after two bone transplants, is now a lively 13-year-old who loves hip-hop dancing.
Ian is well known for his role on the hugely popular television series Strictly Come Dancing which kicked off its 5th season in October. He also produced and was 10 of the 20 fingers that performed in the successful stage production of A Handful of Keys which has been performed to sold-out houses both locally and internationally over the last 14 years.
Venue: University of Johannesburg Arts Centre.
Date: Tuesday, 2nd of December, 2008 to Sunday, 14th of December, 2008.
