Top 10 Dim Sum Spots In Joburg

To broaden my horizons further in the trend of dim sum, I have gone in search of the Top 10 Dim Sum Spots in Joburg.

So Yum – Hyde Park

So Yum offers a unique experience as they celebrate the unique culinary (and tasty) art of dim sum. From what I have tasted, I can safely say that this spot has the best dim sum in Joburg. Choose from their great selection of baked puff parcels, steamed buns, crispy money bags with celery, siu mai and gau (with great a variety of fillings). What I love most is the Spicy Duck Triangle – hot and spicy duck samoosa served with a tasty bean sauce.

Gwefey Asian Cuisine – Morningside

If you are looking for one of the biggest dim sum menus in Joburg, then be sure to pay Gwefey Asian Cuisine in Morningside a visit! From Beijing pork and leek and chive dumplings, beef curry steamed dumplings, Shanghai bao and steamed Jade dumplings, they definitely have something for every palate! The dim sum is a little pricey, but it is definitely worth every penny.

Orient – Melrose Arch

For a fine dining experience with delectable Asian cuisine, be sure to visit Orient in Melrose Arch. They have a wonderful selection of dim sum from prawn gao, Hong Kong pears, pork wontons and beef sui mai to chicken bau and more. They are all delicious and if you have the chance (and the stomach for it), then be sure to try them all!

Kong Roast – Cedar Square, Fourways

Kong Roast is another one of my favourite Thai spots in Joburg and their dim sum is delicious! They have a lovely selection but please note it is subject to availability. The one I can recommend is the gyoza – a portion of four minced pork or spicy lamb with leeks, carrot and chives in a wheat wrapper, fried and then steamed.

KOI Restaurant – Rosebank, Sandton, Lynnwood

I’m no dim sum expert, but I can definitely say that I think KOI Restaurant’s dim sum is some of the best I have tasted in Joburg. The dim sum might be pricey at this spot but they have some of the most innovative options on their menu. Their fillings include chicken and prawn siu mai topped with caviar, salmon and cream cheese topped with caviar, lamb pau just to name a few of the interesting flavours. The verdict? KOI is definitely worth a visit.

Sushiitto on South offers a great selection of Asian cuisine, from Chinese, Thai and Japanese food, seafood and sushi to vegetarian options and dim sum. Their dim sum is steamed and served in portions of three, all you have to do is choose what you are in the mood for – either spinach and cream cheese, butternut, spinach and cream cheese, beef, chicken, prawn or crab.

Wang Thai – Nelson Mandela Square

Whenever I visit Sandton City, I cannot help but swing by Wang Thai for some amazing Asian food! And best of all, they offer the tastiest medley of dim sum I have ever had the pleasure of munching on (along with an allergic reaction to the prawn, but it was so worth it!). You get yummy steamed dumplings with an assortment of fillings that include prawn, shiitake mushrooms, crabsticks, and a divine combination of prawns and shiitake mushrooms. This medley is also served with a vinegary dim sum sauce.

Hokkaido  Norwood

Hokkaido is a Norwood gem that serves up the tastiest sushi as well as a selection of delicious dim sum … the best part about Hokkaido? Their portions are not small … not at all! Go for the spinach and cream cheese combo (along with some sushi, of course) and you’ll be good to go!

Simply Asia  Bryanston

Simply Asia is one of the most well-known Asian food spots in the city. Just about anyone and everyone has been to a Simply Asia at least once in their lifetime. They offer great spring rolls, curries and stir fry but let’s not forget the dim sum. Make your choice from either pastry wrapped prawn, shiitake mushroom, prawn ball with shiitake mushrooms or crabstick dim sum which is served with a special dim sum sauce … yummy!

        1. My vote as well. Once you’ve been for PROPER dim sum you’ll realise that the “cream cheese and duck pot stickers” or whatever else you find on most Westernised Asian restaurant menus is far from the real deal. Be warned though, don’t go to Shun De without someone that has been before 😉

Also, brace yourselves for a massive shock. Cyrildene isn’t for the weak!

  1. Shun De is my first and only choice for authentic dim sum. I’m from San Francisco and love good, authentic Chinese food (especially dim sum). Shun De is the closest to the real deal that you will find in Johannesburg.
