Top 5 Outdoor Activities In The City

As Joburg enters autumn the sun rises later and sets earlier, slowing down the city by a few notches. But don’t let that keep you from stepping foot outside and enjoying that awesome thing called nature. Here’s a list of five outdoor activities that will keep the gloom at bay.

Clay Target Shooting, Centurion

Fancy shooting off some stress over the weekend? Then head to the Waterhaven Country Estate just 20 minutes north of Fourways. This beautiful property hosts an array of different outdoor activities but the real reason why we’re here is to talk about clay target shooting. Nothing quite hits the spot like testing your aim with a hand crafted scatter gun on your shoulder. Don’t let the loud bang put you off trying this at least once in your life – you’ll get used to the noise fairly quickly. Besides, under the guidance of the Westhaven staff you will be hitting targets in no time.

Mountain Biking, Suikerbos Rand

Not many things beat boredom quite like hitting the dusty trail powered by nothing but your own peddling skills. Mountain biking has taken Jozi by storm and many cyclists have traded their tarmac tires for off-road rubber. There are many popular spots within the city’s many parks, but none of them satisfy as much as the 11 kilometer stretch found at Hayani Country Stay on the Suikerbos Rand. The trail itself is ranked at beginner and intermediate levels and should make for a fine mid-morning adventure.

Parkrun, Roodepoort

Every Saturday morning at 08:00 a group of people get together for a five kilometer run at Len Rutter Park. All it takes to join is registering on and bringing a printed copy of your bar code along to the run… Free of charge! Parkrun is a very interesting initiative that not only promotes health and fitness but reintroduces people to the beautiful municipal parks spread in and around Johannesburg. So strap on your running shoes and explore the outdoors. Get going, you!

Nine Holes of Golf, Randpark

Mark Twain once said that golf is a good walk wasted. But what does he know? He only unknowingly conceived the internet, after all. Regardless of his great mind’s lack of approval of the sport, golf is a great way to blow off some steam and maybe close a business deal or two. The Creek 9 is a three par course situated on the Randpark Golf Course. The course itself is short, enjoyable and a great way to rekindle your love with nature by whacking a white ball around for a couple of hours. To make it more interesting, take a black marker with and write the name of the person who annoys you the most on the ball… it’s somewhat therapeutic.

Mountain Climbing, Krugersdorp

It’s been said that the best way to see the world is to climb a mountain and here’s your chance to do so. King’s Kloof is situated in Rock Valley, on a private piece of land just outside of Krugersdorp. The area is a dedicated sports climbing range and takes just under 45 minutes to climb. Climbing spots range between five and 30 meters each. All visits should be arranged beforehand by contacting Rocky Valley’s manager, Derek Schneider. If you’ve never done this before, don’t worry there’s a first for everything.
