All members of the public and media are invited to join VARIETY, THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY and the many celebrities involved, to the official launch of their feel-good HUG-A-THON Campaign, taking place on Wednesday, 21st March 2007 at Hillfox B&B Market in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, from 2pm – 3pm in their Entertainment Arena.

Variety Club took the decision to stage this event on the Public Holiday to ensure that the maximum number of people can attend the official launch of the Hug-a-thon Campaign, in order to introduce the campaign to the public at large, which will be taking place nationwide until the end of April, but so too for the public to get the chance to meet the many celebrities that are giving up their valuable time to support this worthy cause, and to get that all important hug from their favourite celebrity!

This launch will be a fun-filled hour, with the public and media attending seeing these celebrities as they have never been seen before!

Once the formalities are out of the way; with Variety’s Executive Director, Toni Gomes giving the audience the vital details of this campaign, where the monies raised will go etc, the celebrities will then be introduced to the crowds and then the “serious business of training the celebrities will begin”.

There will be a “fitness coach” in attendance who will then get the celebrities to do various warm-up exercises before teaching these celebrities “the serious business of how to hug correctly”. They will also be shown the various different kinds of hugs so that they are fully prepared when the members of the public approach them afterwards for their hugs.

Whilst this is taking place staff members of Variety, The Children’s Charity will be selling the all-important Hug-a-thon stickers for a mere R5 and the Hug-a-thon T-Shirts for R100. If the public wish to get that all-important hug or photo opportunity with their favourite celebrity, one of these items will need to be purchased before-hand at the event.

Once the “celebrity fitness training session” is over, the public who have made these purchases will then have the chance to go and meet their favourite celebrity, get that hug, and then pass it on to others!

All the monies raised from these sales will go towards the all-important Variety Water Relief Campaign, which will ensure the supply of boreholes to schools in dire need of running water.

Another important part of the event will be the release of details of the television advertising campaign about to begin on national television. To support this, Solo Artist SHAUN V – the voice behind the Hug-a-thon campaign – will be singing at this event, live for the first time, his track “THIS LOVE COULD BE” which is being used for this television campaign. Shaun V and his Songwriter, Benjamin Willem, have donated the rights of the song to Variety for the use of this campaign.

Details of various other events taking place nationwide during the months of March and April will also be made public at this event.

Public Holidays are fun days, so why not come along to Hillfox B&B Market for a great day out, have a chance to meet many celebrities, and support a great cause at the same time?

Says Toni Gomes, Executive Director of “Variety, The Children’s Charity”; “It is so gratifying to see how so many people have jumped at the chance to get behind this campaign and support us in their best way possible. From the celebrities who are giving up their time so that they can become huggers at the events, to Shaun V who has so generously donated his wonderful song to the campaign, to the members of the media who have already shown such wonderful support! And of course to the public at large as well – they have responded phenomenally; so much so that we’ve needed to extend the campaign to run into April to ensure that the maximum number of people can get involved, as they have indicated!”

She continued; “The plight of so many young children who don’t have something that we take for granted – like fresh running water – is a cause close to Variety’s heart, and to see the country come together – people of all walks of life – and stand behind this campaign is a sign that we ARE ready for positive change in South Africa! Let this just be a small start, with everyone just giving up their animosity for a moment, and going out there to hug someone!
