Dining In The Sky!
Let’s be honest – at NO point in my life have I ever wondered how food tastes when you’re suspended in the air. In fact, for someone that is quite nervous when it comes to heights, I would never have imagined doing it – let alone loving it.
But love it I did, and now I can’t wait to go back!
Hosted by Sky Events, this unique experience sees the “Sky Table”, surrounded by 22 guests, hoisted into the sky and suspended there for the duration of your meal. During that time, three staff members dish out drinks and a delicious meal, while guests take in the breathtaking views and enjoy the fact that they are doing something mind-boggling!
The process is actually very simple and surprisingly safe. We arrived half an hour early so that we could enjoy a welcome drink and be securely fastened into our seats before “take off”. The seats are amazingly comfortable and once I realised that I couldn’t possibly fall out, I actually began swivelling so that I could take in the view. It takes a little getting used to, but before long I was having so much fun that I didn’t want to come down!
One of the other guests was quite worried about needing the loo. Not to worry, the table descends after the first half hour to restock the next course and offload dirty dishes. There is more than enough time to pop off to the loo!
Also, note that there is no age requirement, but guests must be 150cm or taller in order to be safely hoisted into the sky!
At present, all Sky Events take place at Higher Ground (on the premises of St Stithians College in Bryanston).
Guests can choose from a variety of experiences, including:
- Breakfast – fruit, muesli, yoghurt, muffins and a breakfast wrap
- Champagne Breakfast – as above, but with two glasses of bubbly!
- Lunch – stuffed chicken breast, potato wedges, seasonal grilled vegetables and frozen cheesecake
- Afternoon Snack – mini burger, mini prego, beef kebabs and chicken wings
- Dinner – Salmon Stacker starter, pepper crusted fillet with potato croquettes and grilled vegetables, and frozen cheesecake.
Depending on your selected option, the experience will take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. You can expect to pay upwards of R400 per person, which includes your meal and tea/ coffee. For example, dinner is a full 3-course meal that is spread out over 90 minutes.
I honestly cannot recommend this experience enough. It stands out as one of the most fun experiences I have had in Joburg and is ideal for those looking for a #NoRegrets2018 challenge.
